SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 657,475, dated September 4, 1900.

To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE COMSTOCK BAKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Albany, in the county of Albany and State of New York, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in Check-Proteo tors, of which the following isa full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to check-protectors, and has particular relation to an improved device by which the numbers representing the amount of the check will be permanently indicated in the paper.

The object of my invention is to provide a simple and improved device of this character which will be very inexpensive and especially adapted for convenient use and for advertising purposes.

The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the sep arate parts of my improvement are designated by the same letters of reference in each of the views, and in which- Figure l is a face view of a device embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a corresponding view illustratinga slight modification; Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 4 4 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a face view illustrating a further modification, and Fig. 6 is an edge view of the construction shown in Fig. 5.

In the drawings forming part of this specification, 0; and b designate, respectively, two sheets or plates formed of metal or other suitable material and providedwith a set of stencil perforations, as at 0, representing figures and other devices such as are appropriately used in marking checks. The plates are hinged or connected together at their top edge, as at d, in any suitable or adapted manner, and in the opposite side edges are formed a series of notches or indentations e, relatively arranged on corresponding transverse planes and extending in a vertical series with respect to the stencil-perforations 0, whereby saidnotches or indentations serve as guides in the adjustment of the check with relation to said stencil-perforations.

In ordinary practice the stencil-perforations 0 may be arranged to occupy substantially the whole area of the sheet or plate, said stencil -perforations being arranged in series on cross-lines extending one above the other, as shown in Fig. l of the drawings.

In Fig. 2 I have illustrated a slight modification, in which the stencil perforations c' are arranged at the lower portion of the plate, leaving a free space at the top portion, as at 8, upon which suitable advertisements may be printed. This construction, as illustrated in Fig. 2, is also adapted for punching the check- "paper at either its top or bottom, the top space just mentioned serving to enable the body of the check to be inserted up between the plates a and b, so that its lower edge portion will come Within the line of the first row of stencil perforations.

In Figs. 5 and 6 I have illustrated a further modification, inwhich a paper-cutting blade 10 projects from one of the body sheets or plates of the device. This blade may be secured to its carrying sheet or plate or it may be an integral part thereof, and in use as a paper-cutter the plates at and b, constituting the body of the device, will serve as a handle. It will be understood, further, that in lieu of the blade 9 various articles or desk-tools may be embodied in or carried by my improved check-protecting device.
