Lette/rs Patent No. 97,005, elated .Zove'mber- 16, 1869.
IIHIEROVED SCHOOL-DESK.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the sanne.
. specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective View of my improved n desk.
Figure 2 is a sectional elevation'of the desk`show ing the writing-table elevated, and the means for keepilnglthe same in Contact with the fixed portion of the Figure 3 is a sectional elevation, showing the writing-table closed down upon the fixed part, and the receptacle for the reception of books, papers, and other articles.
Figure 4 is an inside view of a portion of the end of the desk, showing the pin upon which the table turns, and the projection upon which the hooked bar rests.
Figure 5 is a perspective view o f a bar of metal, which is secured to the under side of the table, for securing the same in position.
Corresponding letters refer to corresponding parts in the several figures.
.{lhis invention relates to au improved school-desk an( It consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of its parts, as will be more fully described hereinafter.
To enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
A, in the drawings, represents the end frame of `the desk; it is to be made of metal, and may be of the-form shown in the drawings, or of any other approved constrnction, which will admit of its being provided with a plate, as shown in tig. 4, to which to attah-tlie guide A', which is a strip ot metal, cast upon or otherwise-secured to the frame, and serves as n guide for the bar, shown in fig. 5, to work against as the table is being shifted in its position. v
B represents a seat, which may be of wood, .and secured to an arm projecting from the ends of the desk, as shown in figs. l and 2.
C represents the back tothe seat of the desk, which may be of any approved form of construction, it being secured tothe ends of the desk by screws, or in any other suitable manner.
D represents that portion of the desk which constitutes the writing-table, and which is rnade to fold down' upon the iixed portion, as clearly shown .in fig. 3. v
E represents a receptacle for books, papers, and other articles, which is to be secured to the underor outer side of the writing-table, as shown in figs. 2 and 3 of the drawings.
F represents a bar of metal, which is to be secured to the back or lower side of the writing-table, its form of construction being shown in fig. 5, where it is shown as having upon its outer or upper end a socket for the reception' of a pin, a, which projects inward i'om the ends ofthe desk.
The extreme opposite end ofA this bar is provided with a hook, which, when the writing-table `portion of the desk is in position for use, engages with a projection, b', upon the ends 'of the desk, as shown in fig. 2, and thus insures the drawing together of the parts at their point of contact, so that in the event of ink being spilled upon the desk it will not run through such joint and injure the clothes of the pupil, the contact being more perfect the more the weight of the pupil rests upon the outer portion of the desk.
Just inside of the hook above referred to, this har is provided with another socket, which, when the writing-table is in position for use, rests upon thefpin a, and thus aids in producing theresnlt above described.
The upper surface of this bar, or that portion which comes in contact with'the writing-table, is pro- ,vided with a flange, as shown at o.the outer edge of which passes along the edge ot' guide A', upon the ends of the desk, and thus insures the properv movement o'f the table as it is heilig raised to the position shown in fig. 2, or dropped to the one shown in'g. 3.
Having thus described my invention,
IVhat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Pat- "'Ihe combination of the end frames A, having the guides A', and projections a and b, writing-table D, and levers F, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
-In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
A. S. VORSE.
