I Be it known that I, EDWIN J. Toolnvof Fort Madison, in the county of Lee, and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Combined Paper-Holder and Inkstand; and I do hereby declare and make known that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and the letters and figures marked thereon, which form part of this specification.

My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements which I have made-to be used in connection with the device patented to me on the 30th day of January, A. D. 1866; and consists in the arrangement, in

combination therewith, of an inkstand, operated as hereinafter described; also, in the arrangement ofsprings for pressing a bar against the paper, to secure the paper properly; and also in the combination therewith of a pen-rack, all substantially as hereinafter fully specified and described. r

To enable those skilled in the art to understand how to construct and use my invention, I will proceed to describe 'the same with particularity, making reference, in so doing, to the aforesaid drawings, in which- I Figure 1 represents a plan or top view of my invention, v

Similar letters of reference in the several figures'dcnote the same parts of my said invention, in describing which I donot deem it important to describe minutely those features and functions which are described and claimed in my aforesaid patent. y

' A represents the roller, `arranged upon the shaft a, provided with a knob or button, B, whereby said roller may be revolved, for the purpose of rolling the paper to be copied around it as desired, said roller being in/two sections, one edge of cach beingpressed together with a spring, to secure the'paper therein and upon the roller. Said roller may also be used to hold letters or bills, if desired. 'Ihe whole is mounted upon a frame capable of being extended,'so as to adapt the device to papers" ofditierent widths, said frame being marked C in the drawings. I

D represents 'a bar, parallel to the roller, supported at each end in such a manner as to be adjustable1 towards or from said roller, to suit the varying diameter caused by rolling paper upon the saine, and, at the same time, to press upon the paper and hold it rmly upon the roller, and to prevent the roller from moving when not desired. p

To produce. this pressure, I have arranged springs, M, one end of which is secured to the frame C, and the other rcsts against the said bar.

I have also arranged, in connection with said device, a pen-rack, R It, which may be arranged upon said springs M, as shown, or not, as preferred.

I have also arranged, in combination withsaid device, an iukstand, E, with one or 'more receptacles forink, and a cover-,'F, surmounted by a sponge or other pen-wiper, marked S. I

Said cover is supported upon a crank-arm G attached thereto, which forms partiof a longitudinal shaft, I, said shaft being so constructed in two parts, one, H, sliding within the other, so as to conform to the extending character of the main device, upon the opposite end of which shaft I a rod or crank, J, is attached, so that, by pressing upon the projection J, or the sliding arm K, attached to said crank J, which is guidedjupou the shaft a, as seen in g. 3, or upon the crank itself, the shaft I is revolved, and the cover F raised up from the inkstand, when the pen may be'inserted, and upon removing said pressure, a spring, s, or its equivalent, brings the shaft back to its original position and closes the'inkstand.

Having described the construction and operation of myinvention, I will now specify what I claim and desire to secure by Letters llatent.

I claim the combination of the paper-holder A with the inkstand E, provided with a cover, F, with or withont the sponge-arm G, shaft I, whether extensible or not,`and the crank J, or its equivalent, arranged and operating substantially as and'for thcpurposes herein described.
