Description
,the sides forming the can, showing the shape of the CHARLES R. CTI-S, CF CHICAGO, LLINCIS.
Letters Patent No. 96,949, dated N otember 16, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN SEAMS FOR 'I IIN'A CANS.
The Schedule referred to n these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom 'it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES 1t, Oris, of Chicago, in the county of Cook,'and in the State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Seams for Tin Cans;- and do hereby declare that the ,followhig is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to t-he letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
'lhenature of my invention consists in the formation of the seam, for constructing tin cans of any desired size or shape. 4
In order to enable others skilled'in the artfto which my invention appertains, tomake and use the saine, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective of a square tin can, made with my improved seam, and
Figure 2is part end view and part cross-section of a oi' the adjoining side, which can be donc much easier and far better than any seam now in use.
The upper and lower edges of the sides A A are bent in the same manner as the vertical edge a.
The four edges of the top B are bent at right angles, and the t'op then inserted between the upper edges of the sides A A, and soldered together. The bottom of the can is attached in the sannl manner.
rlhe seams of other than square cans are ma'ie in the same manner. The edges b b, instead of being bent at right angles with the sides, are bent at the same angles'the sides are to be in relation with each other.
For round cans, the edges are, ot' course, bent rounded.
Having thus fully described my invention,
yWhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Pz tent, is-' A seam for tin cans, formed bybonding the edges, substantially in the manner herein shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand, this 28d day of August, 1869.
CHAS. E. OTlS.
seam, and the manner of joining the sides together.
'To form a square can, the sides A A are formed in the following manner:
One of the vertical edges, a, of each side, is bent over close toand parallel with the side, whilethe other Witnesses: vertical edge, b, is bent at right angles with the side. C. L. Evnn'r, lhe edge b, of one side, is then soldered to the edge W. N. SU'ron.
