Description

B. D. HAWKINS; SEED SHIPPING AND DISPLAY CASE.
APPLIQATION FILED MAY 19, 1910- 969,056.
Patented Aug. 30, 1910.
1 g I 1 9 I 4 III] UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BUDD D. HAWKINS, OF READING, VERMONT.
SEED SHIPPING AND DISPLAY CASE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BUDD D. HAWKINS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Reading, in the county of Windsor and State of Vermont, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Seed Shipping and Display Cases, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to display racks, stands and cases, and pertains especially to a combination shipping box and display case for packages or envelops of seed.
The object of the invention is to provide a combined shipping box and display case or rack of novel and peculiar construction for shipping and displaying packages or en velops of seed.
A further object of the invention is to provide special step ends adapted to be hung from the lid or cover of a shipping box and supported by the latter for supporting a series of seed display racks.
Other objects, advantages and improved results will follow in the practical application of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this application: Figure l is a perspective view of a box or case, partly broken away, showing the racks filled with packages of seed and containing the step ends for shipment. Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing the step ends and the racks in display position. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of one of the step ends. Fig. 1 is a perspective view showing a modified form of step end.
The same reference numerals denote the same parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
The seed box or case 1 has a hinged top or cover 2, which is limited in its opening movement by cords 3, and the top or cover is provided with eyes l, the purpose of which will hereinafter appear.
While the box may be of any desired size or shape, it is preferably of the usual size and shape for packing and shipping bags, packages or envelops 5, of seed, so as to contain three racks 6 filled with such envelops, and also containing a pair of step ends 7 The box containing the above mentioned articles is in condition for shipment, and then the box is used for displaying the seed.
The step ends being of the same construc- Specification of Letters Patent.

tion only one of them will be described in detail. For convenience in making the same, 1t 1s preferably composed of two pieces or boards 9 and 13, secured together at 8. The board 9, has a plurality of V-shaped portions 10 forming steps, the base 11 of which is at right-angles to the vertical portion 12. The base 11 forms a seat for the racks 6 and the vertical portion 12 is engaged by the back of the rack. The bottom end of the board 9, has its edge 13 inclined to the back edge of the board and parallel with the step base 11 for engaging the bottom of the box or case 1. The other board 13 is secured on the outer side of the board 9, with its bottom inclined end 14: parallel with the bottom edge 13 of the board 9, and parallel with the bottom step base 11, but off-set therefrom so as to rest upon the edge of the box end. The top of the board 13 has an inclined edge 15 fitting against the box lid or cover, and such end is provided with a hook 16 to engage the eye 1. The board 13, not only supports the step but it forms a closure for the V-openings or steps, so as to prevent longitudinal movement of the racks.
The racks all being of the same construction only one of them will be herein described in detail. It comprises a back 17 a bottom 18, a front bottom strip 19, ends 20, a plurality of partitions 21, which divide the rack crosswise into a plurality of compartments 22, and a keeper rod 23, extending from the ends 20 through the partitions 21 adjacent the front edge of them and central of the vertical length of the same, so as to expose or display packages or envelops of seed and permit ready access thereto.
Referring to the modification shown in Fig. 4- of the drawings, the step end is all in one piece, and the steps 25 are integral with the outer closures 26.
It is obvious that in having the box carry the steps and the racks filled with seed bags, the whole may be shipped together, and then the ends and racks assembled in or on the same box in a most convenient and expeditious manner for displaying the various seed in the racks.
I do not confine myself to any particular size, shape or material in making this invention, and the steps may be made in one or more parts or pieces.
Having thus described my invention what A I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The combination, with a packing and display box having a hinged cover, of a pair of disconnected step ends suspended at their top by the cover, an offset at the bottom of said ends and adapted to engage the top edge of the box ends, an extension of the step ends adapted to engage the inner side of the box ends to prevent lateral movement outwardly of the step ends, and racks fitting V-shaped cutouts in the inner side of the step ends for supporting the racks and preventing their lengthwise movement.
2. The combination, with a packing and display box having a hinged cover, of a pair of disconnected step ends each having a top extension hooked to the cover and having a bottom portion extending from an off-set adapted to engage the top edge of the box ends for supporting the step ends, V-shaped cutouts in the inner face of the step ends, compartment racks fitting such cutouts, a strip partially closing the front of the compartments, and a keeper rod extending through the Walls of the compartments above said strip, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination, with a packing and display box having a hinged cover, and compartment racks, of a pair of disconnected step ends each of which comprises two portions fixed together, one of such portions having Vshaped cutouts for the racks and extending below the other portion and adapted to engage the inner side of the box ends to prevent outward movement of the step ends, the other portion closing the outer side of the said cutouts and having its bottom adapted to rest on the top edge of the box ends for supporting the step ends, and an extension of this portion hooked to the box cover, substantially as shown and described.
In witness whereof I hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
