Letters Patent No. 96,839, dated November A16, 1869.
COOKING-RANGE.
Tho Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom 'it may concern Beit known that I, PHILIPROLLHAUS, of Port Chester, in the county ot' West-chester, and State of New York, have invented a new and improved Elevated Oven-Range; Vand I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof', which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the saine, reference heilig bad to the accompanying drawings, forming part ofthis specifica-tion, in which Figure 1 represents a plan or top view ot' my improved elevated oven-range.
Figure 2 is a vertical transverse sect-ion ofthe same, the plane of section being indicated by the line a: fr, tig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to a new lnannervof arranging the pipes between the water-back and the boiler, with an object ot' allowing them to be made with a short turn, to enable the use of brass pipes. Heret-oi'ore, on the ordinary elevated oven-ranges, the pipes were made of \\-'rought-iron, as they had to be so much bentthat cast-metal could not be employed. They were, therefore, liable to cori-ode, and were, moreover, difficult to reach when injured or stopped.
' My invention consists, tirst, in providing an opening in the stove-plate, and a lid or cover for said opening; Thereby the ends of the pipes, where they are connected to the water-reservoir,can be easily reached.
The invention relates, also, to a novel appliance -for withdrawing the dust from the lower tire-chal'nber, while thelire is being raked, so that a lively lire can, at all times, bekept up.
For this purpose, I arrange a self-closingr damper, on a dust-pipe, in rear ot' the lire-box, the said pipe servingto direct the draught, while the ire is being attended to,` while otherwise, itiscloscd bythe damper.
A, in the drawing, is the lower tier of. an elevated oven-range.
B is its top plate.
C is the water-back or reservoir, arranged in rear of the lire-chamber D.
E E are the pipes, projecting fromy the water-reservoir, to conduct the water to theboiler.
These pipes are, by right and left-hand nuts, a a,
- coupled to the reservoir, and are then each, by a' singie turn, b'cnt sideways, to lead directly to the boiler.
In the plate Bis an aperture, 1),.closed by a lid, c, directly above the nut-s a.
Through this aperture, the nuts can,at anytime, be reached, and t-he pipes put on or taken oli, as may be desired.
Hei'etotbi'e,vvitl1out the opening l), the pipes had to be carried forward to the side ot' the range, in order to be wit-hin reach, and were, therefore, so curved, that they could only be made of wrought-iron.
My pipe can now be made with but one knee or bend, and can, therefore, be cast of brass, and much expense will be saved, besides preventing the corrosion of the pipes. y
In rear of lthe range is a vertical flue, F, which is open on top, and flush with the top ofthe tire-box and water-reservoir, while its lowcr'end extends into the ash-chamber G.
This lower end is automatically closed by, a selfclosing damper, H, which` is pivoted at its upper part, and which is connected with a lever, I, that extends to the front of the range. By pulling the said lever, the damper will be opened; but when thelever is let go, the damper will at once be closed.
\Vl1en the fire is raked the damper should be opened, so that the tine ashes raked down may, bythedraught, be carried up through the flue l?, to be deposited on the top of the water-back O; also, when on the said top, a large quant-ity ofdust has collected, it'may be swept into the tlue, and the damper then opened, to discharge the matter into the ash-pan.
Having thus described luy invention,
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The plate B, covering the lower tier of an elevated oven-range, and provided with an aperture, b,through which the pipes lll can be reached, substantially as herein shown and described.
\ PHILIP ROLLHAUS.
