Description
lUNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY MITCHELL, 0E
RICHMOND, INDIANA;
IMPROVEMENT lN COOKfSTOVES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 47.845, dated May 23,1 f.
To aLl whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1,' HENRY MITCHELL, ofv the city of Richmond, in the county of Wayne, in the Stnteof Indiana, have invented a new and improved inode of distributing the heat etuully about the oven in cooking stoves, am of securing an equal degreeol temperature in every part of the oven, and of distributing,r the heat equally under the top plate, and ot' ccouomizing fuel; and I do hercbydeclare that the following is n full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference. marked thereon.
The plate C, containing the damper B, I place at the upper front corner 0f the oven. The plate() nud damper B are constructed ns usuali, und all thut I claim as to said pluto iii-id damper is the location zit-the upper front crner ot' the oven. I construct a'liue, I, in `front ot' the oven and under said oven, also 1 buck of said oven and over the top ot the", sume, so that when the damper B is closed' the heat will pass in the direction of the arrows from the tire-box into nud down tine I in front ofthe oven; theme no :and :dong line J under the oven; thence into and up` tine .K back ot the oven'; thence over the top i ot' the oven to the pipe l. VThe lient is distributed over the top of the oven by menus ot' the guide-plate A and the pipe II, tho' guide-plate A. by its` position, causing the heut to pass over the top 'of the ovenin the direction ot' the damper B, and the pipe H, by its location-on ,the side of the stove, drawing the -heut back lroni the dnmperB to the opposite side, where the pipe Il is located.
I cla-im 'as new, and as invented by mo und not herbot'ore used or invented by any other person or persons, cutting'` thetire off in front 'ot' the oven, turning,r thc-same down the tine l in front of the oven; 'thence into the flue J under the oven; thence up thc tine K them-.c over the top of the oven.
I claim asncw, andinvented by me and not heretofore used or invented liyany other person or persons, the. position of the guideplnte A, by means ot which the heat is thrown in the direction ot' the damper D, and the position -ot' the pipe ll, by means ot' which the heat is drawn back from said damper B to the opposite side, where snid pipo ll is located, und the rclntivo location ol said guide-plaie und pipel Il, by menus of which saidheat is thus equallyl distributed over said oven and under the top plate of the stove, which, without the use of more metal, and without greater cost or labor iu constructing, gives t'or use six stove-holes in the top pluto nsteud of four, thel number usually used, and always used without an extra ontlay of metal, labor, and cost, the object being to secure an equal degree ot lient on every side and through every part ot the oven.
In other stoves the heat is lrst taken over the top of the oven, down the back ot' thc overhand then under the bottom, andy buck again under the bottom, np the back .of the oven to the pipe. The heat of the llame diV minishcs in proportion to the distance it travels, nud the natural tendency ot' heat is to rise, and when taken it is tirst over the top ot' the oven n; greater degree of heat is obtained there than can be elsewhere, and the| heat against the same `is brought under the bottom of the stove is too much exhausted to erento n dcgree corresponding;` with that at the top, but wheuthe heat is trsttaken doxvn the side and under` the oven by the most direct; route, as I take it, and then over the. ove-n, the. nutural 'tendency ot' heet being,r lto rise., a much more nearly eqnul degree is secured in every part ofthe oven, and the heut, being in this manner more immediately and directly applied, is better economized, and a less pinntity ot' fuel is required.
When it is not desirable to use the oven, the damper B may be opened and the relative position ot' the dampeennd pipe distribute the heat under the two middle lmies on the top plate, thus giving t'our holes for uso in cooking, whereas 'in other stoves the location of the pipe in the middlcot' the back part draws the Haino and lient not directly under the back holes, but between them.
XVhnt I claim as my invention,` und desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
'lhe combination and arrangement ofthe pla-te C, containing the ldamper Il, nt the np per front corner ol' the oven, with the lines l, J, mul K, and the locution ol' the guidi plate A, and of the pipe ll, by means lol' which thc heut is taken. by the shortest and most direct route entirely nround the oven.
