Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Aug. 16, 1910.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Mosns FRANKLIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grand Junction, in the county of Mesa and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chalk Holders or Cups; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to chalk holders and the object of the invention is to provide a device for holding billiard or pool chalk which will be easily made and which will be comparatively cheap to manufacture.

Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character in which the chalk may be easily placed and removed when necessary and one which will be efficient to hold the chalk during its period of usefulness. The type of holder shown is adapted especially for the suspension of pieces of chalk adjacent the billiard or pool tables where in the ,usual manner they are sustained in an out of the way position by pulleys and webs.

With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device with the chalk removed therefrom; Fig. 2 is another perspective view taken from the opposite side; Fig. 3 is a transverse section through the device showing the chalk in position therein; and Fig. 4 is a similar section taken at right angles to the section in Fig. 3; Fig. 5 is an elevation partly in section of a modified form of the invention.

In the special embodiment of the invention, illustrated herein, the clip or holder is pressed up out of a single sheet of metal to form an open ring 1 having its ends 2 spaced apart as at 3 and provided with outwardly extending flanges 4 which permit the engagement of the same by a spreading tool of any character whereby the chalk may be inserted or removed. Immediately opposite the opening 3 there is formed an outwardly extending bend or off-set 5 which forms the knot receiving cup or channel 6. Intermedlate the width of the clip and arranged in the oif-set 5 is an aperture 7 having rounded edges so as to recelve a suspending cord 8 which is shown herein broken away and incomplete. Either or both sides of the device, as defined by the ends and the ofi-set, are provided with punched up knobs or protuberances responding sockets 10 formed in the chalk.

It is to be understood that I preferably make the holders of some material which has great elasticity, such as spring steel or brass andmay either line or cover the chalk with a cushioning material which will prevent the rupture of the chalk when the holder is engaged by any hard body such as a pool or billiard table.

In Fig. 5 the channel 12, is formed by punching up a short portion of the ring forming an aperture 12, therein. In this type of structure the cord is run through the aperture 12, and then knotted and pulled into the channel where the knot is practically concealed.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.

Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction, may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention as defined in the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is:

1. A device of the class described comprising a split open ended cylinder of resilient material adapted to clamp around a piece of chalk, whereby the chalk is exposed at both en s.

2. A device of the class described comprising a split open ended cylinder of resilient material adapted to clamp around a piece of chalk, whereby the chalk is exposed at both ends, and means carried by the cylinder to engage the chalkto positively hold the same within the cylinder.
