CHALK HOLDER AND GUARD.

Figure 1 is an elevation showing the application of the holder. Fig. 2 is a perspective of the holder with the chalk therein. Fig. 3 is a vertical section of the holder with the chalk and guard about to be inserted therein. Fig. 4 is a vertical section of the holder with the chalk in place therein. Fig. 5 is aperspective of the guard device for retaining the chalk in the holder.

1 designates the holder, which may consist of any suitable materialsuch as wood, metal, or various alloysand is adapted to be suspended by a cord or flexible suspension 2, provided with means 3 for supporting the holder in convenient position for use.

The holder 1 consists of a body having a recess or socket 4 to receive the chalk 5, the said recess or socket being of any suitable shape corresponding to that of the chalk. For example, in case of a cylindrical chalk said recess would be cylindrical and of a size to fit the chalk.

The guard device consists of a wire or strip 6, of suitable spring metal bent in staple form, so as to slide, fit, or snap within the socket or recess 4 in the holder 1, the said socket having preferably an undercut or enlargement 7 at its inner end and the arms 8 of the guard device being bent outward at their inner ends, as shown at 9, to snap in such engagement. The other ends of said arms 8 are arms spreading by their own elasticity and being forced in by the wall of the recess to cause engagement of the ends of the arms with the chalk.

In applying the chalk to the holder the guard 6 is placed thereover, as shown in Fig. 3, and the two are pushed together into the recess 4in the holder, the outwardly-bent portions 9 of the guard finally snapping into the enlargement 7 in the holder and the wall 11 of the recess riding over the arms 8 of the guard, thereby pressing the same inward and causing the hooks or inbent portions 10 at the ends thereof to penetrate the chalk or to extend over the end of the chalk, as the case may be. The recess is of such depth that when the chalk is fully pushed in its outer end will be flush or somewhat below the outer end of the holder, so that there is no way to get any hold on or to draw it out from the holder, and the guard engaging both with the holder and with the chalk effectually prevents the accidental displacement and also prevents the chalk from being pried out by any person who might be disposed to abstract the same. The inner end of the recess is concaved, as shown at 12, so that when the chalk becomes worn quite thin the pressure of the cue thereon will break the chalk and allow the pieces to fall out and be replaced by a new chalk.

The guard 6 is preferably bent or con caved downward at its middle portion, as shown at 6, so that when the chalk is pushed in the arms 8 of the guard will be pushed into the chalk by the straightening of this middleportion. The cord 2 is preferably attached to this central part of the guard, so that it draws out with the guard, the cord slipping through a hole 13 in the neck 1 of body 1.

What I claim is 1. A chalk-holder having a recess to receive and fit the chalk, said recess having an enlargement near its inner end, and an elastic guard device fitting in said recess and bent to engage said enlargement of the recess and provided with elastic arms, and having an inbent portion to engage the chalk.
