Description

' To LEZ whom, it mag/ concerns sponding parts.
MCCLINTQCK YONG, oF FREDERICK, iiIARYLANn.4v
iMPRovEMENTiN cRANK-AXLESfFoRvELoclPEDEs' Speciiication 'forming part of Letters Patent No;`96, 618,'dated November 9, '1869.
Be it known that I, MoCLINToCK YOUNG, of Frederick, in the countyy of Frederick and State of Maryland, have invented a new and Improved Crank-Axle and Treadle for Velocipedes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a fullelear, andexact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the alt to make and usethe same, reference being had to 'theaccompanying drawings, forming part lofthis specification.`
Figure l represents va side view. partly in j section, of a craak-axle providedwith niy imx proved treadle. Fig. 2isa verticaltransverse sectionof the. latter taken on the plane ofthe linear ai, Fig. ll.
Similar letters of reference'iu dicate' corre# -This invention relates to vanew manner of constructing treadles for velocipede-cranks, with an object "of making them both light and reliable, as well as of cheap construction, and
to a novell construction of crank'- axle andl eralglto enable the the former. v A
The invention consists, first, yin making a latter to .be formed on vwooden spool, and in attaching to its flanges five or .more rai-ls, so that/one or two such.
Having thusdescribed mymventro-n,Iclaim-` 'as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patenttwo pieces, A
rails willform ya convenient, foot-support,
The invention also consists in majking the crank-axle of 'two pieces7 `joined within the wheel,`so as to enablethe cranks to be formed,
on the said pieces, wliichvwill effectually-prev vent them from working loose. A .in the drawings representsthe drivingcrank axle ofthe velocipede. Upony its crankpinsa are hung spools B 25 each spool being held in place by a shoulder, b, 'of the crank- A' pin. Each spool has shouldersnv at-both ends,
and these shoulders are the means of` support ing five or more horizontal rails, C C, which are rigidly fastened inthem. The several rails serve as supportsfor the feet of the person propelling thejvelocipede. Whenbnly one rail is u sed by the rider, the hollowpf the foot can "be utilized` for applying the power". This treadle isvery light be made Theshaft A isV mad are unit-ed at or about the middle, preterabl'yf by a socket-joint'andlock-pin d, as shown in Fig. 1,`althon screwing together or otherwise. The crank e The advan ness combined with strength, the'enlar'gement secured'to shaft by keys or other devioe, bein' this construction avoidedfthereby savgetting loose, which is now a `sourceof great trouble with velocipedeeranks of' the ordinary ,construction.
