Description

MORGAN GALE, OF 'SAN ANTONIO,
Lettere Petem Ne'. 83,274, deeeez oeeeber 2o, 186s.
IMPROVEMENT IN THE CNSTRUCTIN OI' PICK-AXES.
TheScheduJe referred to in these Letters Patent anddmakng part of the same.
To all whom 'it concern Be it known that 1,M0RGAN GALE, of San An'- tonio, Lower California, Mexico, havenvented a new and useful Improvement in Pick-Axes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact' description thereof', which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming 'part of this speoication. e
yEigure l is a side View of my improved pick-axe, partly in section, through the'line x x, fig. 2*. Figure 2l isa detailseotioual View of the same, taken through the line y y, iig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. y
My invention has .for its objectyto improve the construction of pick-axes, so as-to make them stronger, more durable, and less likely to become loose upon the handle than when constructed in the ordinary manner;
and it consists-in the detachable socket, in combiua.
tion with the handle and head of the pick-axe, as hereinafter more fully described;
A is the handle, and B is the head ofthe pick. The eye of the head/Bis made tapering, so as to be larger upon the outer than upon the innerside of said head, so that the end o'f the handle A, When'wedged into itsf'place, may be morexrrnly held than Ait would be if said-eye were made straight.
C is the socket, which tapers slightly in the other direction from the eye of the head B, so as to resist any tendency of the pick-head'to slip up upon the handleA.
The base, ol, of thesocket O, is extended along and fits upon the upper side of the pick-head B; to whichv its ends are secured by screws passing through the ends of the said base, c, 'and screwing -into the said pickhead, as shown in fig. 1.
c2 are side-danges, .or braces, formed solid upon the socketU, in the angle between the body of the said socket and the base, o, so as to strengthen and brace the said socket.
By this construction,the connection between the han'- dle and head of the'pick-axe, will be greatly strengthcned, and the 1 liability of the head B to become loose upon the handle A will be greatly'lessened, thus increasing the durability and eiciency of the tool.
I claim as new, and desire` to secure by Letters `Patent- The detachable socket C, constructed with a base, c, with or without the side or bra-oe-iianges c2, in combination with the pick-head B, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
MORGAN GALE.
