Description

WILL-,IAM HEWETT, oF rrritlrrotr,` NEWJERSEY.
Letters Pat-ent No. 76,629, dated April, 14, 1868. I
swine-emmer.
Gite rliehnle referrer tu in tlgm Eaters tfeirt mit making putt -uf tigt time.
Be it known that I, WILLIAM HEWETT, of Trenton, in the county of Mercer, and State of New Jersey, have invented a. new and useful Double-Acting Swing-Carriage; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference lbeing had to the accompanying drawings, which forma part of 'these specifications, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
Simlerl'etters of reference where they occur denote like parts in all the drawings'.
Figure `1y represents a. perspective view.
Figure 2 represents a longitudinal bisection. A
Figure 3 showsthe mode of attaching the propelling-rods to the lever, which works under the floor of the carriage'.
Figure 4i is-the main supporting-rod, passing through the upper ends of the bars which support the carriage.
My invention consists inA a double-acting swing-carriage'so arranged-tl1at'one, two, three, four., or more persons can readily use atl'the `same time, andsit face to face, as in any ordinary coach, the floor o f the carriage being closed. There 'are foot-boards on each side ofthe floor centre, which work alternately, and'neither of them can fall below the' level of the iloor, thus -entirely preventing any danger tothe occupa-ntswhle using it.
To enable others to makeuse ofv my invention, I will proceed to describe thesame.
The bars A A A A are the permanentrsupports to the carriage, securelyv fastened to the carriage at' the bottom, and at the top are joined together on one centre, C. v I
B B B B are the propelling-rods, secured at the top in any ordinary manner, both back 'and front ofcentre',
C, and at the bottom are attached by bolts, a a, to levers D D, as shown in fig. 2, at theV end of which levers there are toes formed,4 e e. 4The fulcra of'these levers arc attached to the body of ,the carriage by bolts, e c, und-the toes e e operate under the foot-boardsff, which are hinged to the licor, g1g/,and present themselves alternately whenever requiredfm use, and, when not required, form part of the floor. `Thus when thereare'one or more persons seated ou ea-ch side, with tlieirvfeet resting. upon the Hoor, they cannot use the foot-boardsff unless it. is necessary, hence there can be no loss of power, as one of the foot-boards rest-s on cross-bar I-I, vwhich vis'on the level of' the vfloor, while the other is in use. Power is therefore constantly applied, both in the forward and baekward'motion, by simply pressing the-boards ff whenever they present themselves, and gravity 'is thereby continually assisted. l
E E, in lig. 4, are slots closely fitting in to centre C, causing the bar to oscillatc, for the purpose of transmitting power when required." 'l l 2 y Having thus fully described my inventiomwhat I' claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,'is-
The levers D D, connectng'the rods B B und" the treadles ff, and secured to the carriage by bolts e e, sub-v stantially as and-for the purpose described.. i
