Beit known'thut I, 7WILLIAM EDGAR TWINING, ci' Morrison, in the countyf of Whitesides, and Stute of' Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Our-Couplings; and I do hereby declare that the following is a. full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had tothe annexed druwingspmuking part of this specification, in which the coupling is shown in perspective.

i My improvements consist, first, in attaching to the' link a handle, by which it can be held without exposing the person couplingl the curs to the danger oi having his hund crushed between the draw-heads; and, secondly, in the form given to the draw-head, by which Vthe link is held securely without using a coupling-pin.

In the annexed drawings, A. is th'e link, which is the ordinary coupling-link with handle A! attached, projecting on each side of the centre. The handle should he long enough to enable 4the person couplingthe eur to hold the-link in the proper position to enter lthe draw-head without being` exposed to the danger of having his hund crushed between the druwflieuds or buffers. B is the draw-headVwliich I construct as shown. The hook B1 is curved buck to hold on its under side the link A. Two recesses,` B2 andla, are formed in the back of' the draiwheud. The link, being introduced through the open space in the 'top of the draw-head, cannot escupe While the cars reina-in on the truck, for, on being relaxed by the cars coming together, the link will be pressed back either into the recess B2, or, rising along the slope of the hook Bl, it will enter recess Il, the rop of which is carried so far forward that the link euu only escape when lifted vertically, which can only occur by hund, or when one of theV curs is thrown from the truck, so us to push the link nearly vertically.4 The link muy be used with the ordinary pin-coupling.

What I claim as my invention, und desire to secure by Letters Potent, is-

The drow-head B, constructed with the hook B1, und recesses B`2 und B3 arranged substantially as described.
