Description
T. D. POWERS.
Car Coupling.
No. 58,883. Ptented Oct. I6, 1866.
Q 'Qc v o UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOS. D. POWERS, OF ROCHESTER, VISOONSIN.
IMPROVED CAR-COUPLING.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 58,883, dated October 1G, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, T. D. POWERS, of Rochester, in the county ot Racine, State of Wiscousin, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Self-Couplers for Cars; and I do .hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in so constructing a bumper with springs, lever. bolt, link, and slide that it will connect itself, allowance being made for the different height ot' cars by the beveled aperture and the flexibilityT ofthe spring.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
I construct my bumper with an aperture large enough to admit of a spring or springs to support the link in its place and allow it to adjust itself to the diii'erent height of trucks,
as shown in the accompanying drawings.
A is the aperture; B, springs, C, bolt at. tached to lever D, which rests on the fulcrum E, and t'astens under catch F when the boltis raised.
I also make a slide, G, which is pressed back by link H, and throws off the catch which holds the lever, and drops the bolt through the link. Back of the catch F is a rubber spring, k, to hold the catch to its place.
The bolt is raised by pressing on the end of lever, and when so raised allows the cars to separate, and leaves the coupler set ready for attachment, all operating substantially as set forth.
The slidingblock Gr, having the guide-springs A B attached, the pivoted lever D, with the bolt G attached, and the spring-catch F, when arranged to opera-te as shown and described.
