Letters Patent No. 75,270, dated March 10, 1868.-
IMPROVEMENT m GAR-GOUPLING.
We 5x11211111: mirth in in flgest 3mm new: an mttinggntt at tin same TO ALL WHOM'IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, WIsFInLn H. Hoovnn', of North Benton, in the county of Mahoning, and in the State of Ohio, have invented certain newand useful Improvements in Ger-Couplings; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the-accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon. i 4 r I In the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, A represents one end of an ordinary freightcar, provided with staples or metallic loops a and b, for the drawhead B to \iork in. B representsa drawhead, secured to the car A by means of the metallic loops at and b, and' has a spiral spring, 0, embracing the end behind the ioop'b, and between it and a pin passing through a slot, 3:, by which the drawhead B is secured! and held in the loops a and b, and therehy to the ca-r A. r v I The drawhead B has a bevelled or flaring 'mouth,'so as to guide the link D to the proper place beneath" the pin C. Within the mouth of the draw-head B is pivoted, at the top, ,a. peculiar-shaped drop, .E, which is made with trvo forks or flanges, forming a half circle, and having the front side, at the bottom,- bevelled, so as to rest fir'mlyffpn'the under side of the openingin the drawhead'. The drop E is pivoted so that when it's Iowerendis raised up to a horizontal position the forks thereof embrace and surround the hole innvhioh the coupling-pin C is plaeed, and allows said pin to pass down through the link D and loiver side of the drawhead B.
When the link D iswithdrmvn, and the pin 0 raised up, the drop E falls down so that it obstructs the hole for thc coupling-pin, and forms a rest therefor on the upper side of the curve made by the forks thereof, and holds said pin until it (the drop) is again elevated by means of the link D. 'l
D represents a peculiar-shaped link, made with a; shoulder and hole at one end, the shoulder corresponding \vitha groove in the under side of the drawhead B, for the purpose of holding said link firmly in its position, zind the hole for the coupling-pinto pass through and hold the link from being pushed back too far into the mouth ot 'the drawhead. r
F represents a movable vertical bar-{provided with a loop at the top, for a handle,.and' secured to the end of a car, A, by men'nsof staples, and reaching to the top of the car. Thebar F has attached to it, at the lower end, a. horizontal arm,f, which-has pivoted to the outer end of it a. hook, e, which hooks into a hole in the top of the coupling-pin C. I 1 1 i H H represent levers, which are both pivoted to the vertical bar F and to the end of the car A, their outer endsivorking in and iii place by means of staples d d, These levers H H are for the purpose 'offraising the bar F, and thereby the coupling pinc, and thus uncouple the cars, without getting between the ends of the cars, and thereby endangering the life or the opjerntor. The cars may be uncoupled by means of the handle at the top of the bar F by a person ontopiof the cars. I
When the cars are uncoupled by this or any other means, the drop E falls down, and thereby holds the pin C up until the end of the link D is inserted in the mouth-of the drawheadiB, and displaces said drop when the pin drops through the link and under side of the drawhead.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The combination of the pivoteddrop E, link D, pin 0, nnd drawhend B, when operated by the bar F, with its 'side levers H H, allconstructedand used substantially as and for the purposes set forth. In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I' have hereunto set my hand, this 23d day of December, 1867.
