WILLIAM H. MAYO, OF HIL-LSBURG, NOVA SCOTIA.
Letters Patent No. 64,890, dated May 21, 1867.
IMPROVED GAR-COUPLING.
an fitlgthnle mirror in in time itettets fitted ant mating part at tip: Sttlltt.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: I
Be it known that I, W. H. MAYO, of Hillsburg, in the county of Digby, and Province of Nova Scotia, have invented a new and improved Gar-Coupling; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and
exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make andlnse the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is aplau or top view of my invention.
Figure 2, a side sectional view of the same taken in the line at :t, fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
This invention relates to a new and improved car-coupling of that class which are commonly termedselfacting or self-coupling, and it consists of a draw-hook attached to one draw-head, and a projection or ledge attached to the other draw-head for the hook to catch over; the above parts being used in connection with a releasing or disengaging mechanism, all arranged as hereinafter fully shown and described, whereby the coupling of two cars, when they come in contact, is rendered certain, and the ready disconnecting of the same,
when necessary, efiected.
A representsthe draw-head of a railroad car having a draw-hook, B, connected to it by a pin, a, and O is the draw-head of an adjoining car, which has a metal box, D, upon it, open at the top, and having its front part provided with flaring sides, I; b, as shown clearly in fig. 1. The bottom, 0, of this box, between the sides I) b, is inclined downward from its rear to its front end, leaving a vertical projecting ledge at its rear for the hook B to catch over, as shown clearly in fig. 2. represents a bent or right-angular plate which works on pivots, d, the long portion of said-plate being in a horizontal position, or nearly so, and slightly curved, as shown in fig, 2'. F is a lever which is attached to one side of a plate, e, the latter extending transversely across the lower part of plate E, and having a pendent,f, at each end, which are pivoted to the sides of the box D. A spring, g, bears against the lever F, said spring having a tendency to keep the levr F thrown forward and free from the upright rear part of the plate E, as will be understood by referring to fig. 2. TheleverF is connected by a rod, k, to an arm, i, which is pivoted to the upper edge of one ,side of the box D, and works under a guide, j, attached to the same side of the box. The rod h is pivoted to the outer end of the arm z, and is connected by a link-joint to the lever F. This arm 1' serves to prevent the draw-hook B from casually rising free from the rear end of the bottom 0 of the box D, as said arm is over the draw-hook B when the latter catches over the rear end of the inclined bottom a. r i
In. order to uncouple the cars, all that is required is to draw back the lever F to the position shown in red in fig. 2, and the plate e comes in contact with the upright part of plate E, and forces said part of E backward, and consequently raises the horizontal part of c, which throws up the draw-hook B and liberates it from the rear end of the bottom 0. In coupling, the draw-hook shoves back the arm iand passes underneath it, the spring 9 pressing the lever F forward as soon as the draw-hook drops and catches behind c.
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent The draw-hook 13, connected by a pin, a, to one draw-head A, in combination with the box D attached to the other draw-head C, and provided at its front part with an inclined bottom, 0, the bent plate E, lever F, connected with plate e, and with an arm 1', by a rod 70, and the spring g, all arranged to operate substantially in the manner as and for the purpose herein set forth.
' W. H. MAYO.
Witnesses W. F. POTTER, JOHN G. WADE.
