Description

No. 66,385. PATENTBD JULY 2,1857.
J. EETTBNGILL, JR.
GAR COUPLING baisses, will@ @nitro 'faire gedient ffies.
'JOHN'-PETTENGILIM JR., 0F LISBON, `NEVVI.H Atlldl'SHIRE, Letters Patent No. 66,385, dated July 2, 1867 IMPRovnD csnooUPLINe;
To ALL WHOM 'I'riMAY coNcElm Be it knownthnt I, JOHN IEr'rENG'Itn,
1x.,of Lisbon, Grafton county, New Hampshire, have invented a new and improved CarCouplinglg andIdo hereby declare that the following'is a full, clear, and exact descritti' tion thereof, which will enable otherssltilled` in the' art to makeand use thesame, referencebeing had to lie' aecompanyiii'gdrawings, forming part of this'specilication, in which-.-
` Figure 1 is a longitudinal central section of 'my improved car-coupling.'
Figure'2 is a horizontal section of the same.' Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parte.
This invention relates to a. self-acting car-coupling, which is so arranged that the link 'will be held between` the elastic sides of the coupling-box, so' that the link is prevented from rattling, and is always'held firmly in any desired position. Provision is also made that' high and low cars can be coupled.. The coupling-pin rests upon a pallet orhorizontal upper arm of an elbow-lever which is pivoted to the 'coupling-box by spin which passes through thelower part of the vertical arm of said elbow-lever. IThe weight of -th'e horizontal arm and of the coupling-pin keeps the lwhole lever forward; but as s oon as the lin'k'strikes any portion of the vertical arm of the lever, the same'will be bent back, and the horizontal part be withdrawn. from under the couplingpin,.
which willdrop through the link. As soon :xs the pin is raised again, and' 4the link withdrawn, the weight of the'horizontal armwill bring the elbow-lever again into the aforesaid positioni4 A represents a coupling-box, made of suitable' material, and of (the usual feint. Across the' front opening of the box is placed a bar, B, which divides the entrance into an upper and llower part, so that the links C will have less play up and do'wn. The sides of thel box are open, and springs D D are arranged therein,` which are firmly secured to the rear endl of the box, their front ends forming elastic sides ofthe box.' )As is clearly shown .l in iigs. 1 and 2, these springs do not extend quite to the; front end of the box, but leave a strong bumper frame in front. The faces of the springs D in the coupling-boxes may be covered with India rubber, leather, or other suitableelast'c material. E is anfL-shaped lever, of wblich the horizontal arm Aa is o'n top, and points forward,
as shown in the drawing. The vertical arm b of the lever is pivoted by a pin, c, to the sides of the box A, theV said piu'passing through'the lower part of the arin b, andas near to therear edge of the same as possible. The whole lever E will thus be madel to lean forward-*byits own gravity, as shown in iig. 1, and the end of the arm will close the hole d in the pperpartfof the box A, as shown.- F is the coupling-pin, which rests upon the end of the arm a, 'and passes *through the hole d, as 'shown in iig. 1. When the link C is pushed into the box, it strikes the erinb of the levergE, and throws it back," so 'as to release the pin F, which' will then drop down thronghthe link', as shown onthe -right-hand side of iig. 1. As soon as the pin is raised and the link removed, the arm-a will drop forward and close the holeI d again, as shown in the left-hand sideof iig. 1; The joint weight of the arm` a and pin will hold the' said ar'm a in position forward, so that no rattling or shaking :notion of the car will be ablto swing the lever E back-and drop the pin F' spontaneously. The springs D D clamp that end of the link whichis in the box irn'ily, and prevent the same frorn moving sideways unless when turning the lcurve. -They will' then give as much as necessary, and will at once resume their original position when the curve is passed. They act as elastic cheeks 4for the sides of the box A, and hold the link in' any desiredposition.
j Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to eec'ure'by Letters Patent, is
The'combination of the box A, link C, springs D, and elbow-plate E, with leach other, all made and oper ating substantially as herein4 shown and described. l
