UNITED :STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GILBERT BUDD AND GABRIEL T. DAVED, OF PHILLIPSPORT, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN ATTACHING- SHOES TO SLElGH-RUNNERS.
Speciication forming part ofLetters Patent No. 125,718, dated April 16, 1872.
Specification describing certain Improvements in Attaching Shoes to Sleigh-Runners, invented by GILBERT BUDD and GABRIEL T. DAVED, of Phillipsport, in the county of Sullivan and State ot' Naw York.
This invention consists in constructing the main portion of the shoe with oblique tenons to t into corresponding mort-ises in the under sides of the runner.
The main portion of the shoe may be made in two or more parts, connected by oblique V- shaped joints, and secured firmly in position by the front part of the shoe or hanger, as it is technically termed; or' the main part ofthe shoe may be made in one piece.
In the accompanying sheet of drawing, Figure l is a side View ot a sleigh-runner, partly in section, as indicated by the line ma', Fig. 2, and having, a shoe applied to it according to my invention. Fig. 2 is` an inverted plan of Fig. 3. is a detail cross-section of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts.
A represents a sleigh-runner, and B B B" a shoe composed of three parts. The rear parts B B comprise the shoe proper, the front part Bl being technicallytermed the hanger. The rear parts B B are each formed with two oblique or inclined tenons, a a, at their upper sides, and these tenons tit into corresponding mortises, b, in the under side of the runner, and the abutting ends of the parts B B are made to form a V-shaped dovetail, c, as shown in Fig. 2, and inclined, as shown in Fig. 1. The abutting ends of B and B are similarly locked together, and B is secured to the runner by bolts and screws d, either or both; or the main parts B B' of the shoe may be made in one piece, and provided with two tenons.
It will be seen that the parts B B are secured to the runner without the aid of bolts or screws, and will be firmly secured in position, as they cannot move in any direction; and they may be readily detached, whenever necessary, by unscrewing or nnbolting the hanger B".
The main parts B B of the shoe, whether made in one or more pieces, is made with a tongue, b', running along the center yof its upper side, which enters a groove in the center of the under side of the runner to strengthen the shoe against side movement.
By this construction neither the shoe nor runner will be weakened by bolt-holes. There will be no bolt-heads to wear oii, and the wearing surface of the shoe will be perfectly smooth. This construction strengthens both the shoe and runner, and enables the shoe to be easily l scribed.
