Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 19, 1910.
Application filed December 7. 1908. Serial No. 466.271.
To ali whom it may concern? lie it known that l. (names XV. Kinsrii, citizen of the United States, residing at Three Rivers, in the county of St. Joseph and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful improvements in (furtain-Rods; and I do hereby declare the foltion and combinations of {parts hereinafter fully described and Ulilll'IlQk In the accompanying drawings illustrating this invention: Figure l is a top plan view paitly in section of a curtain rod constructed in accordance with my inventiou. Fig. -'2- is a front elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary detail view in elevation showing means employed for securing the telescopically interfitting members of the curtain rod against relative movement. Fig. 4- is a detail section on the line. H of Fig. 3-.
My invention consists more particularly in certain details of construction of an ad- ,justable curtain rod whereby the simplicity, convenience, and general a ppearance and adaptability of the rod are improved as will be more particularly pointed out in the following.
The rod proper consists of flat members A and B madeof strips of sheet metal, the side edges of which are bent over so that their frceedges are opposed to each other and roviding opposed U-shaped grooves C adacent the side edges of the strips, the strip B being of such smaller dimensions than the member A as to fit snugly telescopically within the latter. Strips of this form are illustrated and described in Letters Patent No. 850089 granted to me April 9, 1907. This patentshows the rod curved at its ends.
In my present invention the rod is straight and is secured at its ends to brackets D which I believe to be novel. Said brackets consistof opposed U -shaped plates, one flange of each abutting against the roonf face of the window casing and being there secured, and the other flange extending parallel therewith. To the last named llanges the projections 15 are secured, the free ends of the latter being annular-1y reduced and threaded. The iuiddle or web portions of the plates 1) are provided respectively with openings 1* and recesses G to receive the end projections of shade rollers. The free end portions of the members A and 13 are pro vidod with openings to receive said threaded ends of said projections and are secured thereon by means of the rosette nuts H.
The latter consist of round disks of sheet,
metal having central threaded openin", the
central portions surrounding said opening being drawn to form cylindrical recesses l. Substantially semi-spherical sheet metal caps J are then pressed into said recesses edge. downward, thus hiding the threaded ends of the projections from view and rendcring the nut very ornamental. Each of said flanges may be provided with a plurality of said projections E to support a plu raliiy of rods as illustrated. The shape of the brackets I) may be varied to suit dill'erent tastes and meet diti'erent conditions. The said openings 1 and recesses G may be so spaced as to permit a single shade roller supported therein to be adjusted to dili'erent positions or they may be spaced to accommodate a plurality of shade rollers. Thus shades of difi'crentcolors may be hung behind laee curtains and various color efi'ects produced in the room.
In Figs. 3 and 4 l have illustrated means I for fixing the relative positions of the members A and B relatively to each other ,to make a curtain'rod of fixed length.
The adjustabilit-y of -'the rod is of value only in primarily mountin the same to provide the proper length or rod. 'After the brackets are mounted and the rod adjusted to it it is desirable to maintain it at such fixed length. To accomplish this I provide a wedge L which is driven into the end of the member B within the member A and slightly expands the former, whereby it becomes so firmly wedged in the latter as to be incapable of relative movement except upon exerting extraordinary strain.
I claim as my invention:
1. A. device of the kind specified, comprising brackets secured to the window frame in opposed relation to each other,
Q: omens said brackets being U-shaped the middle portions thereof being provided respectively wit.h openings and recesses to receive the send projections of a shade roller, one flange of said brackets being secured to the window casing, projections on the free flan es of said brackets having reduced threa ed free end portions, a curtain rod provided in its ends with openings to receive said threaded end portions of said projections, and nuts engaging the latter to secure said curtain rod in place thereon.
2. A device of the kind specified, comprising brackets secured to the window casing on opposite sides thereof and provided at their free ends with flan es, projections on said flanges having refuced threaded free end portions, a curtain rod having 0 nings in its end portions to receive said t. ireaded end portions of said projections nuts engaging the latter to secure said rod in lace thereon, the portions of said brae 'ets lying between the points of attachment thereof to the casing and said flanges being provided respectiv y with openings and recesses to receive the end projections of shade rollers.
3. A device of the kind specified, comprising brackets secured to the window easmg on opposite sides thereof and provided at their free ends with flanges, projections on said flanges having reduced threaded free end portions, :1 telescopically adjustable curtain rod having openings in its end portions to receive said threaded end portions of said projections, nuts engaging the latter to secure said rod, the portions of said brackets lying between the points of attachment. thereof to the casing and said flanges being provided respeciively with openings and re cesses to receie the end projections of shade rollers.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
