Application filed. January 16, 1913.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, Josnrir B. TTANNON and CHARLES H. VON DRAK, citizens of the United States, and residents of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Curtain-Supports, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to improvements in curtain supports and has for its object the production of a device of this character which will be of durable and economical construction and eliicient in operation.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention willbe best understood by reference to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, and in which,
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the upper end portion of a window frame to which is applied a curtain support embodying our in vention, Fig. 2 is a sectional perspective view of the curtain rod embodied in the invention, Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the brackets included in the construction, and Fig. 1 is a front elevation of a modified form of bracket.
The preferred form of construction as illustrated in the drawing comprises a pair of brackets each of which consists of a sheet metal body 1 provided at one end with an angularly projecting flange 2 having perforations for the passage of screws in fastening the bracket in position. Cooperating with the outer end of the body 1 is a plate 3 secured thereto by means of cars 4t and 5 which embrace the plate or body 1, as clearly shown in Fig. 3. Formed in the outer end of the body 1 is an upwardly opening slot 6 adapted for engagement by the end of the curtain rod cooperating therewith. This rod is of a longitudinally adjustable nature comprising two telescoping sections 7 and 8, each of which is formed of a piece of sheet metal which is bent upon itself in the manner indicated in Fig. 2. The section 8 is of U'form in cross section, as shown, for engagement with a U-formed slot 9 which is constituted in the section 7, the slot 9 being adapted to snugly receive the end of the section 8, as will be readily understood. A rod is thus formed which possesses great rigidity, the same being adapted to withstand great Specification of Letters Patent.

vertical strain or pressure, since the rod is of a flat construction with the broad side or greatest thickness disposed vertically. For this reason the rod is adapted for use particularly in supporting wide curtains or in con unction with wide windows, the same being free from sagging such as is the case where rods of conventional construction are used in conjunction with wide curtains or windows.
The outer ends of the rod sections 7 and 8 are formed with laterally projecting flanges 10 which engage behind the outwardly offset portions of the body plates 1 surrounding the slot 6. The rod is thus releasably sup ported so that disengagement thereof may be readily and easily effected. The plate 8, as will be observed serves as a stop preventing longitudinal movement of the rod.
here the bracket is to be used upon a surface which is disposed perpendicularly to the rod, a bracketof the construction shown in Fig. 1 is used. In this construction the body plate 1 is formed circular, the rearward end thereof which is utilized for connection with the window frame, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3 being dispensed with. In this form the plate 3 is also circular in form or of a form corresponding with the plate 1', said plate 3 being secured to the plate 1 by ears 4. Said plates 1 and 3 are perforated in order to accommodate fastening screws 11. The rod which is used in conjunction with the modified form is identical with that above described, the ends of the rod being adapted to engage the slot 6 in the plate 1, said slot and the edge portions of the plate 1 surrounding said slot being formed in pre cisely the same manner as in the preferred form.
While we have illustrated and described the preferred forms of construction for carrying our invention into effect, these are capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of our invention. e, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail ourselves of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claim.
Having described our invention what we claim new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A curtain support comprising a rod made up of telescoping sections, one of said sections being formed substantially U-shaped in cross section With each of its leg portions In testimony whereof We have signed our 10 rebent inwardly and the other of said secnames to thls specification 1n the presence of tions being also U-shaped 1n cross section two subscriblng wltnesses.
and telesoo ed on said first mentioned sec- 5 tion With it leg portion bent around the re- AK bent leg portions of said first mentioned section; and laterally projecting bracket snp- Witnesses: porting ears on each of said sections, sub- JOSHUA R. H. PoTTs, stantially as described. B. G. RICHARDS.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents, Washington, D. G.
