COMBINED RULER AND PAPER-CUTTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 28, 1910.
Application filed. October 27, 1909. Serial No. 524,877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK A. DIBRELL, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Coleman, in the county of Coleman and State of Texas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combined Rulers and Paper-Cutters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to combined ruler and paper cutters, and one of the principal objects of the same is to provide a device of this character which will engage the paper firmly without danger of moving during the ruling operation and in which ink from the pen will not be liable to soil the edge of the ruler and blot the paper.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a combined ruler and paper cutter in which the paper cutter is formed of a fiat sheet metal strip adapted to lie upon the paper and engage the same from end to end and from side to side, while the ruler is formed upon one edge of the cutter and provided with a curved portion and a downwardly inclined edge adapted to lie above the paper and out of contact therewith, so that a pen drawn across the edge will not deposit ink thereon and be liable to blot the paper.
These and other objects may be attained by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a ruler and paper cutter made in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same, shown with a scale thereon. Fig. 3 is an end view of the same.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates a paper cutter preferably made from a single piece of sheet metal or other material and practically flat from end to end and from side to side to lie upon the paper and to firmly hold its position without liability of moving. A foot rule or scale 2 may be provided upon the face of the cutter, as shown in Fig. 2. Bent from one edge of the cutter 1 is a ruler comprising a backwardly bent portion 3, a curved portion A and a downwardly inclined ruler member 5, the terminal edge 6 of which is disposed in a plane above the cutter 1.
The manner of using my combined ruler and paper cutter may be briefly described as follows: When the paper cutter 1 is desired for use it is placed flatly upon the paper and held down with one hand, While the other is used for lifting the paper against the straight edge a. When it is desired to use the ruler, the device is placed upon the paper and held down with one hand while the pen is drawn from one end to the other of the straight edge 6. Owing to the fact that the edge 6 is disposed above the paper the ink will not be liable to smear the edge 6 or to blot the paper under said edge.
My invention is simple in construction, can be manufactured from a single piece of sheet material, is inexpensive to manufacture and is very desirable for the reason that it will lie firmly upon the paper and not become displaced during use. Furthermore, the ruler member of the device will not blot the paper nor permit the ink from the pen to smear the edge thereof. Still further it will be evident that the device is always ready for use either to cut paper or as a ruler whether it is lying face up or down on the paper.
I claim A combined ruler and paper cutter comprising a paper cutter member consisting of a rectangular sheet having a scale thereon, and a ruler formed by rebending a portion of one of the longitudinal side portions of the sheet and then curving the remainder of the side portion outwardly and downwardly to a point in advance of the adjacent side of the sheet and until the edge of the said curved portion is in a plane with the said rebent portion.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRANK A. DIBRELL. Witnesses J. O. WOODWORD, WINNIE JENKINS.
