JOHN A. WITT, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
THREAD-CABINET.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 21, 1910.
Application filed June 12, 1909. Serial No. 501,801.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN A. IVITT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Thread-Cabinets, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in thread cutting devices and more particu larly to a device for holding spools of thread having means in connection therewith for cutting off threads as desired by the user, the object of the invention being to provide a simple and inexpensive device of this character which shall be convenient and serviceable.
With these objects in view my invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and more particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
My invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which,
Figure 1 is a top plan view of my invention in its preferred form, Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof, Fig. 3 is a detail top plan view, Fig. 4c is a detail vertical longitudinal section, Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view, Fig. 6 is a detail end elevation, and Fig. 7 is a detail bottom elevation.
Referring now to the drawings 1 designates a tray having sides 2 and a longitudinal partition 8. Threaded spools 4; are rotatably mounted on the vertical pins 5, the thread 4 from said spools being passed around the friction devices 6 as shown in detail in Figs. 3 and 4E. Said devices are provided with screw holes and are secured to the partition 3 by means of the screws 7. Each of these friction devices comprises a tubular portion 8 having an inwardly extending flange 9 on which the helical spring 10 is seated, the latter engaging the flange 11 formed on the plunger 12. The spring 10 is a compression spring hence the head 13 will be drawn downwardly and will impinge the thread interposed between the same and the top of the tubular portion 8. The thread may be grasped at 4 and drawn out the desired length and then be inserted in a slot 13 of the thread cutting device 15, when it is readily out off by a sidewise movement in either direction, the elliptical opening 16 or enlargement of the slot 13 being provided and so shaped as to cause the thread to be drawn downward gradually on the cutter 16 as the thread is being drawn sidewise.
After the thread 4 has been cut off it is desirable to have the portion 4: to remain as shown in Fig. 1, and to accomplish this purpose a spring friction device is provided. This device comprises a spring 16" preferably square in cross section bent and secured to housing 17 of the cutting device 15 by means of the rivets 16" as shown in Figs. 5, 6 and 7. The thread when inserted between the two ends of the spring 16 is gripped thereby, said spring thus forming an effective frictional holder.
In order to provide an endwise adjustment of the cutter 16 so that a new cutting edge may be available, slots 17 are formed in the ends thereof. The heads of the screws 18 impinge the sides of the cutter 16 and hold the same securely in any adjusted position when the thumb nuts 19 on said screws are tightened, said cutter resting upon the perforated bosses 20.
Various slight changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of parts described without departing from my invention, and hence I do not restrict myself to the precise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the scope of the appended claim.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
In a device of the class described, a tray having sides and a bottom, a partition interposed between two of said sides, a plurality of thread friction devices mounted on said partition and each comprising a tubular portion carrying an upwardly extending headed plunger and a retracting In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN A. WITT. Witnesses:
HELEN F. LILLIs, JOSHUA R. H. Poms.
