Description

M. ECKSTEIN Aug. 16, 1960 SCORING TOOL Filed July 22 INVENTOR. WRRIS E-CIKSTEIN Unit e next SCORING TOOL Morris Eckstein, 1935 E. 17th St, Brooklyn, N.Y.
Filed July 22,1955, Ser. No. 523,690
1 Claim. (Cl. 30-162) This invention relates to a tool for reducing the sizes of boxes and cartons.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a tool which is particularly designed for easily and readily reducing the sizes of boxes and cartons and which combines the functions of a scoring device and a knife.
It is another object of the present invention to provide a tool of the above characteristics which includes an adjustable guide for positioning the scoring portion of the device so as to easily and readily permit the scoring of boxes or cartons at any desired elevation.
Other objects of the present invention are to provide a tool for reducing the sizes of boxes and cartons bearing the above objects in mind which is of simple construction, inexpensive to manufacture, has a number of parts, is easy to use and eflicient in operation.
For other objects and a better understanding of the invention, reference may be had to the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a preferred embodiment of the present invention;
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view thereof shown partly in elevation and taken along the line 2-2 of Figure '1;
Figure 3 is a fragmentary perspective view of one end of the tool showing the knife blade in the extended or operative position;
Figure 4 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view taken along the line 4-4 of Figure 3; and
Figure 5 is a bottom plan view of the tool.
Referring now more in detail to the drawing, indicates generally a tool for reducing the sizes of boxes and cartons according to the present invention and includes an elongated, hollow body 11 of rectangular cross section open at both ends and provided at one end with the elongated longitudinal slot 12, substantially as illustrated.
A rectangular cap 13 is adapted to fit downwardly onto one open end of the tool and is secured thereto on three sides by means of the screws 14, the cap 13 at the top thereof having a rectangular slot 15 for a purpose which will hereinafter become clear.
A channel-shaped guide '16 of rectangular cross sec tion fits downwardly within the slot 15 with the outer face thereof lying flush with the inner face of the body 11 (Figure 4). The channel-shaped guide 16 is provided at its lower end with the upturned portion 17 (Figure 4) within which is positioned a spacer 18. The spacer 1-8 is provided with an internally threaded bore into which is screwed the countersunk screw 19, the inner end of 2,948,960 Patented Aug. 16, 1960 "ice ' the screw 19 extending through the'p'pening 20 provided in the guide 16. Thus, the' lower' endof the'guidel-is secured by means of the screw 19 while the upper end thereof is positioned within the slot 15.
(It will be noted that the three screws 14 are also countersunk in the cap 13.
The guide 16 in its outer face is provided with the elongated slot 21 aligned with the slot 12 of the body 11. A knife handle 22 of U-shaped cross section (Figure 4) is slidably mounted within the guide 16 and is integrally formed with the semicircular knob 23 which extends outwardly through the slots 21 and 12, the outer edge of the knob 23 extending beyond the body 11 to facilitate sliding movement thereof with the thumb and being serrated, as at 24, for easier gripping.
A knife blade 25 is fixedly mounted within the handle 22 and is of such a length as to be extended when the knob 23 is in the raised position of Figure 3, while at the same time being entirely concealed within the guide 16 when the knob is in the lower position of Figure 1. Thus, the knife blade 25 may be easily and readily extended or retracted for a purpose which will hereinafter become clear.
A scoring member is provided at the other end of the device and includes a rectangular plug 26 secured within the other end of the body 11 (Figure 2) by means of welding 27, the plug 26 having the inwardly extending, internally threaded bore 28 within which is screwed an externally threaded stud 29 having the smooth central portion 30 and an externally threaded outer end '31. A disc 32 is positioned on the stud 29 at the smooth central portion 30 thereof against the plug 26 and fixedly mounts about the periphery thereof the angularly spaced prongs 33. A nut 34 is screwed onto the lower end 31 of the stud and retains the plate 32 in operative position thereon.
As a means of adjusting the elevation of the score fines which will be eifected by means of the prongs 33 in a manner which will hereinafter become clear, an adjustable sleeve 35 of rectangular cross section is slidably positioned on the outside of the body 11, being locked at any position longitudinally thereon by means of a plate 36 secured to one side thereof and a thumb screw 37 screw threaded through the plate 36 and sleeve 35 and adapted to bear on the body 11 (Figure 2). The thumb screw 37 includes the enlarged, externally knurled head 38 to facilitate the loosening and tightening of the same.
A U-s'haped positioning rod 39 is integrally formed at the free ends thereof with the laterally extending shank portions 40 disposed at substantially right angles thereto and secured to the outsides of the sleeve 35 by means of the welding 41 (Figure 1), the central portion of the positioning rod 39 being bent outwardly, as at 42 to facilitate the reception intermediate the rod 39 and body 11 of the upper margin of a box.
While various changes may be made in the detail construction, it shall be understood that such changes shall be within the spirit and scope of the present invention as defined by the appended claim.
I claim:
