Specification of 'Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. it?, i922.
Application :filed January 3?., .1.919. Serial No. 274,322.
To czZZ 'ur/tom t may concer/i.'
Be it known that l, FEUX A'ovnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Manila, bhilippine islands, have invented certain new and useful improvements in a Pocketknife7 of which the following is a specification.
This invent-ion relates to a combined pocket-knife and toothpick case, an object of the invention being to provide a device of vthis nature which. may be conveniently carried about in one pocket, and if the point of a toothpick needs resharpening 'or shaping, the same can be readily done by the employmentof the knife blade which is slidably carried within the handle or main body of the device.
It is well known that in rural districts especially, and on picnics or like excursions, it is 'often very diiiicult to procure toothpicks, if a person does not happen to have them with him, and in many cases where they are carried loosely in one pocket the points thereof often become broken and need reshaping` for use, which is very inconvenient in cases where the user does not have a pocket-knife convenient. t is an object of this invention to provide a device which will eliminate such inconveniences, by incorporating in the handle structure thereof a pivotally mounted spring-controlled receptacle for containing toothpicks, which receptacle may be easily opened, to permit the removal of a toothpick therefrom, and also to associate with the toothpick retainer and carrier a knife blade which may be utilized for shaping the points of the toothpicks, amongother uses.
Another object of this invention is to provide a novel construction for connecting the knife blade t0 the handle, the said handle being provided with a longitudinally eX- tending recess opening` out in one end of th-e handle,v in which recess the knife blade is telescoped, being carried by a suitable carrying block at the innermost end of the knife blade, which carrying block has also connected thereto a locking member adapted for engagement with suitable recesses at the. opposite ends of the handle to prevent accidental sliding movement of the knife blade, and which locking means further serves as a thumb grasp for moving the knife blade out 0f the recess in the handle.-
Other objects of the invention will appear in the following detailed description taken ings, forming a part of this specification,
and in which drawing:
lFigin'e l is a perspective view of the improved knife and toothpick carrier;
F ig. '2 is a longitudinal section through the device;
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the device having parts broken away to illustrate the spring which controls the movement of the toothpick retainer; and
Fig. l is a cross-section on the line ll-t of F 3.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, l generically indicates the handle of the device which handle is formed of a pair of connected sections 2 and 3. These sections 2 and 3 may be connected in any suitable manner.
rllhe section 2 ofthe handle l is provided with a longitudinally extending' recess 4 which opens out at one-end of the handle and which recess telescopically receives the knife blade rilhis blade 5 may be ccnsvructed in any desired shape and its inner end is inserted in a carrying block 6. The carrying block 6 snugly fits the recess i as clearly lshown in 2 of the drawing, and it has a bracket member S which substantie-.ily U- shaped attached to or formed upon its inner end to which is pivctally connected a locking member rlhe locking member 9 is suhstantially T-shaped. and the lateral projections of its head portion are adaptedto seat in the recesses l0 and ll formed in the outer surface of the section 2 of the handle l, short distances inwardly of each end of the handle, for locking' the blade 5 against movement either when telescoped or seated within the recess, at which time one of the transverse lugs of the locking member 9 is seated in the recess l0, or locking` it in extended position as shown in Fig. l of the drawing at which time the other laterally extending lug of the locking member 9 is seated in the recess 1l. rlhe section 2 of the handle l is provided with a longitudinally extending slot 12 in which the members 8 and 9 move during the longitudinal movement of the blade 5. rEhe head of the locking member 9 serves also as athumb or nger rest for moving the knife blade longitudinally. For instance, when it is desired to extend the blade 5', the locking member 9 is first moved outwardly upon its pivot to move the transverse lug or portion of its head out of the recess 10 after head and the blade 5 is therebyy forced longitudinally out ot the end ot thehandle,atter Which the lockingmember 9 is swung aboutA upon its pivot, so that the transverse or laterally extending portion 18 ot its head Will rest or engage in the recess 11 loclring the knife blade in its extended position.
The section 3 oit the handle 1 is provided with a recess 14 Which opens out in the outer side or face of this section and receives therein the toothpick carrying receptacle 15. The outer side 16 of this receptacle 15 is shaped to snugly close the recess 111, as
. clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 5 ot the drawing, and this outer` sideprojects a short distance beyond the outermost portion of the sides 18 of the receptacle which sides are cut away, as shown at 19, at their end portions, so as to permit the gripping a toothpiclr with a persons fingers, for removing the toothpick from the receptacle or carrier.
Vylhe toothpiclr vreceptacle or carrier 15 Vis pivotally mounted upon a pin 2O carried by `the handle section 3, and the outer side-16 extends rearwardly of this pivot pin 2O forming an abutment against which one end of the spring 21 engages. The spring 21 is coiled about the pin 20 as shown at 22 and it hasV its other end 23 engaging against the adjacent surface of the plate 24 which is positioned between .the sections 2 and 3 of the handle 1. The tendency of the spring 21 is to spread its end portions and thus retain the carrier or casing 15 Within the recesses 14, or t0 return the said carrier or casing into the recess yafter it has been forced out of the same by downward or inward pressureupon the portion ot the outer side 16 rearwardly of the pivot oit the receptacle.
Changes in details may be made Without departingt'rom the spirit of this inven tion, but; y v
