SAFETY RAZOR Filed Aug. 25, 1954 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Attorney UNITED STATES Patented Jan. 22, 1935 PAvTENLTaaoFFICE 1,988,815 .l SAFETY aAzoR l Y K John Sima, San Diego, Calif. i' Appiication August 23, issgserlial No. 741.1253* sclaims. (orso- 12) The present invention relates to new anduseful improvements insafety razors, for use particularly in shaving and trimming hair and has for one of its important objects to provide, ina manner as hereinafter set'forth, a razor embodying novel means for firmlysecuring a double edged blade in position for use. Y VOther objectsof the invention are to provide a `in use, compact, light in weight and which may be manufactured at low cost.
All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from astudy of thev following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and wherein:
Fig. 1 is a view in front elevation of a safety razor constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a view in vertical' longitudinal section through the razor.
Fig. 3 is a top plan view. y
Fig. 4 is a detail view in elevation of the double edged blade.
Fig. 5 is a View partially in side elevation and partially in section, showing the blade mounted in its other position.
Fig. 5 is a detail view in perspective of the outer jaw and its handle, the grip piece being omitted from said handle.
Fig. '7 is a detail view in perspective of the inner jaw and its handle, the grip piece being omitted from said handle.
Fig. 8 is a detail view in front elevation of the swinging guard.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, it will be seen that the embodiment of the invention which has been illustrated comprises a pair of coacting, pivotally connected clamping jaws l and 2, the outer jaw l including integral side flanges 3 having aligned openings 4 therein, and a top flange 5 having formed therein a transversely extending slot 6. Formed integrally with the top flange 5 is a rearwardly extending handle '7 which terminates, at its free end, in an upturned lip 8 having an opening 9 therein, the purpose of which will be presently set forth.
The inner jaw 2 has formed integrally therewith a handle 10 which includes a short, downturned forward end portion 11 which fulcrums in the slot 6. It will thus be seen that the jaws 1 and .2 Aare pivotally connected. with each other vfor swinging movement'fwhen the handles '7 andl are swung toward or away fromV each other. When thejaws 1 and. 2 are in clamping position, the handles ,7 and 10 `are in side abutting engagement, las shown to advantage in Figs. 2 and 5 of the drawings. rIt `will also be noted that the handle 10 is disposed above the handle 7.
' `Rigidly secured on the handles 7` and 10 are grips k12 VandY 13, respectively. The grip 13 is chambered, as at 14, (see Fig. 2) for the reception hof a slidable springactuated vbolt 15 `which isengageablefinvthe opening 9 of the upturned lip 8vfor releasably securing the handles in closed position. g. The boltA 15 includes( an -upstanding Asubstantially Ll-shaped intermediate portion 16 providing means for conveniently actuating said bolt through the medium of a thumb or finger.
Mounted between the side flanges 3 of the outer jaw 1 is a toothed guard 17 which is folded upon itself in a manner to provide a spacing plate 18 on the forward side of said guard. On its upper portion, the guard 1'7 has formed thereon trunnions 19 (see Fig. 8) which are journaled in the openings 4 for mounting said guard for swinging movement between the jaws 1 and 2. The guard 17 and the spacing plate 18 are riveted together, as at 20. Inturned hooks 21 are provided on the upper portion of the spacing plate 18 and lugs 22 project rearwardly from an upper portion of the guard 17.
The reference numeral 23 designates a double edged blade which is adapted to be removably mounted between the guard 17 and the inner jaw 2, as seen in Fig. 2 of the drawings, or between the spacing plate 18 and the outer jaw l, as shown in Fig. 5. The corners of the blade 23 are recessed or notched, as at 24, for the reception of the lugs 22 when said blade is mounted as shown in Fig. 2,.and for the reception of the hooks 21 when the blade is mounted as shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings.
In use, when it is desired to trim hair, the bolt 15 is retracted for permitting the handles 7 and 10 to be swung apart, thus opening the jaws 1 and 2. The blade 23 is then mounted on the rear face of the guard 17 with the lugs 22 engaged in the uppermost recesses 24. The handles 7 and 10 are then swung together and secured through the medium of the bolt 15, thus closing the jaws 1 and 2 and firmly clamping the blade in position on the guard 17. When it is desired to use the razor for shaving, the blade 23 is mounted on the forward side of the spacing plate 18 with the hooks 21 thereof engaged in the uppermostI recesses 24. The handles '7 and 10 are then swung together and secured for closing the jaws 1 and 2, thus firmly clamping the blade in position. When thus mounted, it will be noted that the cutting edge of the blade 23 which is being used is spaced forwardly of the teeth of the guard 17.
It is believed that the many advantages of a safety razor constructed in accordance with the present invention will be readily understood, and although a preferred embodiment of the invention is as illustrated and described, it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to which will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed is: o

A safety razor of the character described comprising an outer jaw including side anges and a top iiange, a handle projecting from the top flange, a guard journaled for swinging movement between the side flanges, a removable blade engageable selectively with the front or rear of the guard, an inner jaw fulcrumed on the top iiange and co-operable with the outer jaw for clamping the blade in position on the guard, a handle projecting from the inner jaw/said handles constituting means for opening and closing lthe jaws, and means on the handles for releasably securing said handles in operative position.
2. A safety razor of the character described comprising an outer jaw including side flanges and a top flange, a handle projecting from the top flange, a guard journaled for swinging movement between the side flanges, a removable blade engageable selectively with the front or rear of the guard, an inner jaw fulcrumed on the top flange and co-operable with the outer jaw for clamping the blade in position on the guard, a handle projecting from the inner jaw, said handles constituting means for opening and closing the jaws, and means on the handles for releasably securing said handles in operative position, said handles including grip members, the last named means comprising a substantially angularly extending lip on the freevend of one of the handles having an opening therein, and a spring projected bolt slidably mounted in the o grip member of the other handle and engageable in the opening, said bolt including a substantially U-shaped intermediate portion projecting from said grip member and constituting means -for manually actuating the bolt.
3. A safety razor of the class described comprising an outer jaw including opposed side flanges, a guard journaled for swinging movement between said side flanges, said guard being folded upon itself for providing a spacing plate, inturned hooks on the spacing plate, lugs projectingrearwardly from the guard, a removable blade engageable selectively with the guard or with the spacing plate, said blade having recesses therein for the reception of the hooks and the lugs, an inner jaw fulcrumed on the outer jaw and co-operable therewith for clamping the blade in either position, handles on the jaws for opening or closing said jaws, and means for releasably securing the handles in operative position.
