Be it known that I, JOHN J. DREW, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Gallons Remover; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description ot the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the numerals of reference-marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This inventionrelates to an improved type of a callous remover constructed with a cutter blade, against which a spring controlled pivoted guard is adapted to engage in such a way that when the callous remover is applied to a callous portion, the guard will be adjusted to control the depth of cut.r n y It is an object of this invention to provide a callous remover wherein the openingin the base plate into which thecutter blade projects is closed by a spring controlled pivoted guard plate which overlaps the cutting edge of the cutter blade and is adapted to be moved away from said cutting edge by the callous to be cut.

It is also an object of the invention to provide a callous remover having a hood for receiving the cuttings and removable for emptying when a removable side of the callous remover housing is removed.

It is a further object of the invent-ion to provide a callous cutter of simple and effective construction adapted for shaving oft callouses, and further adapted to be' readily opened up to permit cleaningthereot' and removal of the cutter blade and the lblade guard when necessary.

Other and further important objects of this invention will be apparent from the' dis-` closures in theY specilication and accompany- -ing drawings.

This invention (in a preferred form) is illustrated in the drawingsand hereinafter more fully described. i

rIhe reference numeral 1 indicates a housing provided with a pocket 2. One side of the housing 1 is permanently closed by a side member 3, which is rigidly secured irf place by welding,soldering, or any other suitable means. The opposite side of the housing 1 is open and is adapted to be closed by a removable side member l. rThe rear end of the housing 1 is enlarged to receive'a longitudinally split `cylindrical vsleeve 5 rigidly secured transversely therein. n The two sides 3 and el. of the housing are straight at the bottom flanges which extend slightly below the flat bottom plate 6 of thekho'using, as shown at 7; lt desired, the bottom iianges of the side plates may be flush with vthe bottom plate 6. The flat bottom 6 is kprovided with a transverse-opening 8, into which the cutting edge of a cutter blade 9 projects. The. cutter blade 91 is positioned within the housing 1 and has the inner endthereot projecttheslot10 in the split sleeve 5 Figure 4). The blade 9 is provided with l longitudinal slots, through which set screws 11 project to hold'cross bars 12 in set positions on opposite sides of Vthe blade with one of said bars disposed in the sleeve 5 and the other bar positioned on the outside ot the sleeve. s i

Reinovably engaged transversely in the lower Vfront portion ot the housing pocket2 is a rotatable pin 13, to which is secured a fguard'plate 14: adapted to be resiliently held against the upper ysurface of the lower or cutting end of the blade 9. To resiliently hold the guard 14 against the blade 9 a f spring 15 is securedto the pin 13 with the free end engaged against the-inner surtaceot the top wall of the housing 1, as illustrated inFigure 3. The pin 13, the` guard `plate 14, and the spring 15, are removable from the housing as a unit when the side member i is removed. As illustrated in Figure 4, the top of the housing is provided with two transverse beads or slotted guides 16 t-o slidably receive the ends of a hood or cover 17, which is removably engaged on the top of the housing 1 over the pocket 2 to receive the cuttings or shavings cut oli' by the blade 9 when the callous remover is used. The hood 17 is retained in place by the removable side member 4.

The safety callous remover is shaped to be conveniently gripped by the hand of a user, and is adapted to be worked back and forth over ay callous to shave oif portions of the same Without danger of cutting the flesh. When the bottomopening 8 `of the callous remove-r'rea'c'hes the calloused portion which isftoV be removed, the callous projects into said opening and against the spring-iinpelled guard plate 14, which is consequently swung inwardly against the action of the spr-ing 15 an amount depending upon the pressure applied by the user. The amount of, opening between the cutter blade V9 and the guard plate 14 determines the thickness of thel cut taken by the callous remover. Thesliavings cut on' by the callous remover are forced into the pocket 2 and are prevented from falling out by the hood 17. Vllien'it becomes necessary to empty the callous'remover the same is inverted and the side4 removed. The hood 17, into which tlie'shavings have fallen, is now pushed out ofthe'l open side of the housing and may be emptied. The cutter blade 9 may be adjusted-y byV adjusting the cross bars 12 by simplyloosening the set screws 11. The blade v9 is readily removed from the housing when 4the side member 4 is removed from the housing.' Y Y iI' amaware that numerous details of construction' may be varied through a wide range without departing from the principles of this invention, and I therefore do not purpose limiting the patent granted otherwise than necessitated by the prior art.

I 'claim as my invention 1I A callous remover comprising a housinghaving an `opening in the bottom thereof and a'pocket in said housing communicating with said opening, a split sleeve secured in said housing, a'blade having one end projecting into said split sleeve and the other endvprojecting into said bottom opening to afford a cutting edge, and a spring-impelle'd guard plate pivotally mounted in said pocket to close said opening and resiliently engage against said blade.

A' callous remover comprising ahousing having a bottom opening and a pocket communicating with one another, a split sleeve rigidly secured in said housing, a blade in said housing projecting into the split sleeve and into said opening below the pocket, means on said blade to permit adjustment thereof, a guard plate pivotally mounted in said pocket, and a spring in said housing for resiliently holding the guard plate against said blade to close said opening.

A callous remover comprising av housing having an opening in the-bottom thereof; a split member in said housing, a blade in said housing having one end projecting into said split member and the other end' pro jecting into said opening, a guard plate pivoted in said housing, a springfor'holding the guard plate against said blade, and a hood on said housing.
