To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Jnss G. BosToN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combined Knives and Sharpening-Stones, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to pocket and similar knives and has as its object to provide, in conjunction with the handle of such a knife, means for housing in the said handle a hone or other type of abrading or sharpening element in such manner that the neat appearance of the knife will be retained and its ordinary use in no way interfered with, and yet to permit of the ready removal of the hone or the like for use in sharpening the knife blades, and its ready replacement.

Another aim of the invention is to provide novel means for removably securing the housing for the hone in place on the handle of the knife, so that while the hone will not be liable to loss, it may be readily. removed and replaced in the accompanying drawings:

In the drawings, the numeral 5 indicates a pocket knifeof the general type and the numeral 6 the plates of the handle between which the blades of the knife lie when closed. At one side the knife handle is pro vided with the usual butts and scale but at the other side the scale of the handle is omitted, the handle butts at this side being indicated one by the numeral 7 and the other by the numeral 8. The numeral 9 indicates a hone or other type of sharpening element which is disposed, when not in use, against the outer face of the plate 6 and which is housed in a manner to be now explained.

The housing for the hone 9 comprises a shell which is preferably formed of sheet metal and which consists of a back 10 provided with marginal flanges 11, this housing being positioned against the plate 6, with the edges of the flanges abutting against the face of the plate and lying flush with the longitudinal edges thereof. The butt 7 is formed with an undercut recess 12 in its inner end, and the corresponding end of the housing shell is provided with a marginal flange 1.3 having a struck-out extension lt adapted to fit within said recess, whereby this end of the housing shell is held against upward as well as lateral separation from the butt 7. The hone 9 is pivotally connected to the housing shell, one end of the hone bein fixed within a sleeve 9" fitting between the fianges 11 and pivoted thereto as indicated at 9. The rear end of the shell has an indentation 15 forming a keeper aperture for a latch. The butt 8 adjacent to the keeper aperture 15 has a recess 16 pr0- vided with a throat 17 in which is slidably mounted a latch 18 having a tongue 19 pcsitioned to enter the keeper aperture 15. In order that this latch may be manipulated, the butt 8 is formed with a slot 20, and the latch is formed with a finger piece 21 which projects outwardly therefrom and through said slot, in position to be engaged by the finger for the purpose stated. Secured at one end, as at 22, within the recess 16 in the butt 8, is a leaf spring 23 which bears against the end of the latch 18 and tends to project the tongue thereof into engagement with the keeper aperture.

From the foregoing description of the invention it will be understood that when it is desired to use the hone, the latch which holds the housing shell in place may be retracted and the said shell removed so as to permit of removal and use of the hone. The hone is preferably to be laid upon a flat surface during the time of its use and may be held by the fingers, or, if desired, the last described end of the housing shell may be disposed to overlie one end of the hone for the purpose of steadying the latter while it is being used The pivotal support of the hone 9 enables the same to be swung up as shown in Fig. 5, and outward until it eX- tends in longitudinal alinement with the shell 10. Now, the shell need only be held in the hand during the sharpening process, and the hone will lie steady, there will be no danger of cutting the fingers with the knife blade.

I claim:

The combination of a. member havin spaced butts on one side, a housing mounted and, furthermore,

on said member between the butts" and composed of a shell having a back and marginal side flanges inwardly directed and engaging the face of the member, one of the butts having an undercut recess in its inner end, and the corresponding end of the shell having a marginal flange provided With an extension fitting in such recess, a latch for locking the opposite end of the housing to the adjacent butt, and asharpening element mounted in 1 the housing and pivotally connected to the side flanges thereof.
