Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented March 26, 19057.
Application led March S, 1906. Serial No. 304.865.
To {1J/Z 'LU/wm it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD J. KILLIAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cutlery, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide an article of cutlery which will afford to the possessor at all times readily-available means for sharpening the blade of the article.
The invention is applicable in various forms, and I do not desire to limit myself to the specific construction hereinafter described.
The accompanying drawings illustrate the invention.
Figure l is a view of a knife embodying my invention in one of its forms. Fig. 2 is a view of said knife with the detachable handle-section removed and turned to expose the abrasive or blade-sharpening face thereof and tilted slightly backward to bring into view the faces of the uppermost walls of the slots or grooves 6 7. Fig. 3 is an axial section on line indicated by x3 x3, Figs. l and 2. Fig. 4 is a section on line indicated by fc4 r4, Figs. l and 3. Fig. 5 is a section on line indicated by x5, Figs. l and 3.
l in a general way designates a knife, which may be of any desired construction or character, and 2 is a handle-section or slab thereon, which also may be of any desired form of construction or character, the same being provided on one side, preferably the inner side, with an abrasive or bladesharpening face 3. The handle-section may be detachably fastened to the knife by any appropriate means. In the form shown in the drawings such means comprise two catchese and 5, which enter slots -6 and 7 in the detachable section 2 when said section is brought into its seat 8, provided in the handle proper of the knife. The catch 5 is a spring-catch, desirably formed of a tongue bent outward from one of the ribs 9 of the knife-handle. l0 is a push-button on the end of the spring-catch 5, by which the same may be depressed for the purpose of detaching the section 2. The knife-handle tips ll and I2 overhang the ends of the detachable section 2, as clearly shown in Fig. 3, and said ends are beveled to fit beneath the overhanging walls of said tips.
In assembling the handle the handle slab or section 2 will be placed in position by iirst slipping the end 13 of the slab 2 into the seat 8 with the catch t in the slot 6. Then the slab will be pushed into place to bring the catch 5 into the slot 7. Thereupon the knife is complete and has substantially the appearance of an ordinary knife.
\fVhen it is desired to sharpen a blade, the push-button l0 will be pressed in and the slab 2 pushed out of its seat 8, whereupon the abrasive face 3 can be used for sharpening the blade. The ends of the slab are cut aslant and the ends of the seat 8 are conformed thereto, so as to permit of the ready insertion and withdrawal of the slab, allowing the same to be firmly seated in its seat.
The abrasive face 3 may be of any suitable character, as a slab of carborundum cemented to a bone or horn backing, which forms the usual handle-surface of the section 2.
What I claim isl. The combination with a knife-handle,`
tips and rib, of a detachable handle-section provided on its inner face with a slab of abrasive material and provided with slots at its ends, said ends being beveled; said tips being beveled to overhang the beveled ends of said section, and catches for said slots, one of said catches being in the form of a spring.
2. The combination with a knife-handle, tips, and rib, of a detachable handle-section provided on its inner face with a slab of abrasive material and provided with slots at its ends, said ends beingbeveled; said tips being beveled to overhang the beveled ends of said section, and catches for said slots, one of said catches being in the form of a springtongue bent from the rib.
8. A knife provided with a handle having a seat, a slab seated in said seat and provided with an abrasive face and a slot, a tongue bent from the rib of the handle to enter said slot, and a push-button on said tongue.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand, at Los Angeles, California, this 2d day of March, 1906.
JAMEs R. TowNsEND, JULIA TowNsEND.
