COPY-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 8, 1907.
Application filed June12,1907. Serial No. 37:34.73.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELirnALn'r BLANCHARD DUKE, 'a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Cookeville, in the county of Putnam and the State of Tennessee, have invented a new and Improved Copy- Holder, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to copy holders, and one of its objects is to provide a copy holder that can be readily adjusted to typewriters of different makes, including machines for typewriting in books.
Another object is to provide a copy holder that rests securely in an upright or folded position, because of the construction of its parts which places the center of gravity of the copy rack where it bears down and holds the copy rack in place, at the same time keeping the copy rack in close proximity to its support.
Another object is to provide a copy holder, the copy rack of which can be adjusted to convenient heights and can be turned laterally to different positions, and also one that will fold, permitting of its use in drop cabinets and desks and cases of different character.
Still another object is to provide a copy holder which can be economically constructed and which can be used on every character of machine manufactured.
In this specification 1 will describe the form of my invention which is shown in the accompanying drawings but I do not limit myself thereto, as I consider myself entitled to all forms and embodiments of the invention which may fall within the scope of the appended claims.
In the drawings similar reference characters refer to similar parts in all the figures, in which Figure 1 shows a front elevation of the copy holder and a member by which it is secured to the typewriter or desk on which the typewriter may be placed; Fig. 2 is a similar view with the copy rack folded; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the copy holder as attached to the frame of a machine; Fig. 4 is a view of the member by which the copy holder is secured to a typewriter or desk and shows one method by which it may be attached to the typewriter or desk; and Fig. 5 shows a clamp which by the said member may be secured to a machine in another manner.
The copy holder is secured to the desk or typewriter by the member 1, which is preferably triangular in shape, with a slot 2, running therethrough. This member 1, has a notch 3 cut at one end, in which a rod 5 is pivoted by a pin 4. The rod 5 has its terminals approximately at right angles to each other with its middle portion 6 bent inwardly toward the vertical plane of the member 1, so that theouter terminal of the rod 5, will be approximately over the middle of the inner terminal of the said rod. This construction is used in order that the copy rack 7, which is supported by the said rod 5, will by its own weight be held securely in place, and at the same time, when the rod 5 is folded as indicated in Fig. 2, it will be held down and will not interfere with the closing of the cabinet. The rod 5 is hollow and an extension rod 8, telescopes in its outer terminal. This extension rod is rigidly secured to the copy holder 7 by a fastener 9. A set screw 10, holds the extension rod 8 and the rod 5,in predetermined relationship. At the top of the copy rack 7, is the usual clamp 11, to hold the copy in place.
The device as above described may be used withany character of typewriting machine, as it is not only possible to clamp the member 1 to a typewriting machine by a screw 12, passing through the slot 2 and screwing into the frame of the machine, the screw 12 with its washer 13, being plainly indicated in Fig. 4, but it is also possible by the use of a clamp 14, to secure the said member to the frame of any typewriter. The clamp 14 has a portion 15, which is adapted to press against the member 1, and the said clamp also has a portion 16, which is adapted to press against the typewriter. The said clamp 14 is drawn together by the set screw 17. These clamps may be made in various sizes to satisfy all conditions of use.
Fig. 3 shows the copy holder secured by a clamp to the leg of a typewriter. It will be seen that the copy holder can be manufactured very cheaply for it has very few parts and these parts can be easily constructed. It will also be seen that there are very few adjustments which need to be manipulated to obtain the best results from the use of the device.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A copy holder consisting of a slotted member by which the copy holder may be secured to a typewriter, a rod pivoted to the slotted member, the said rod having its terminals approximately at right angles to each other, its middle portion being bent and the outer terminal of the rod being disposed approximately over the middle of the inner terminal of the rod, and a copy rack attached to the rod.
2. A copy holder consisting of a slotted member by which the copy holder may be secured to a typewriter, a rod pivoted to the slotted member, and a copy rack secured to the outer terminal of the rod, said rod being bent inwardly to keep the copy rack in close proximity to the slotted member while at the same time keeping the center of gravity of the copy rack and red at a relative distance therefrom.
3. A copy holder consisting of a wedge-shaped member by which the copy holder may be secured to a typewriter, a rod pivoted to the wedge-shaped member, the said rod having its terminals approximately at right angles to each other, its middle portion being bent and the outer terminal of the rod being disposed approximately over the middle of the inner terminal of the rod, and a copy rack attached to the rod.
4. A copy holder consisting of a wedgeshaped member by which the copy holder may be secured ,to a typewriter, a rod pivoted'to the wedge-shaped member, and a copy rack secured to the outer terminal of the rod, said rod being bent inwardly to keep the copy rack in close proximity to the wedge-shaped member while at the same time keeping the center of gravity of the copy rack and rod at a relative distance therefrom.
5. A copy holder consisting of a slotted wedgeshapcd member by which the copy holder may be secured to a typewriter, a rod pivoted to the slotted, wedge-shaped member, said rod having its terminals approximately at right angles to each other, its middle portion being bent and the outer terminal of the rod being disposed approximately over the middle of the inner terminal of the rod, and a copy rack attached to the rod.
6. A copy holder consisting of a slotted, wedgeshaped member by which the copy holder may be secured to a typewriter, a rod pivoted to the slotted, wedge-shaped member, and a copy rack secured to the outer terminal 01' the rod, the said rod being bent inwardly to keep the copy rack in close proximity to the slotted, wedge-shaped incinber While at the same time keeping the center of gravity of the copy rack and rod at a relative distance therefrom.
7. A copy ioldcr consisting of a slotted member by which the copy holder may be secured to a typewriter, a telescopic rod pivoted to the slotted member, the said telescopic rod having its terminals approximately at right angles to each other, its middle portion being bent and the outer terminals of the telescopic rod being disposed approximately over the middle of the inner terminal of the telescopic rod, and a copy rack attached to the telescopic rod.
8. A copy holder consisting of a wedgeshaped member, a rod pivoted to the wcdgeshaped member, the said rod i having its terminal approximately at right: angles to each other. its middle portion being bent and the outer terminal of the rod being disposed approximately over the middle of the inner terminal oi the rod, :1 copy rack attached to the rod, and a clamp by means oi? which the \\'0(l L,"('Hllil]lttl member may be secured to a typewriter.
St. A copy holder consisting 01' a wedge-shaped member. a rod pivoted to the wedgeshaped member, a copy ltlt'li attached to the rod, and a clamp by which the wedgeshaped member may be detachably secured to a stand.
10. A copy holder consisting of a member by means of which the copy holder may be secured to a. typewriter. a rod pivoted to the said member, the said rod being bent to keep the copy rack in close proximity to the said memher while at: the same time keeping the center otf gravity of the copy holder and rod at a relative distance therefrom.
11. A copy holder having a rod adapted to be pivotally secured to a typewriter, means to pivotally secure the rod to the typewriter, the said rod being bent to keep the copy rack in close proximity to the typewriter while at th same time keeping the center of gravity of the copy holder and rack at a relative. distance therefrom.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
