FOlLDlNG SUPPORT FOR GAME OR OTHER BOARDS.
SPEGIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 695,949, dated March 25, 1902.
Application filed April 22,1901.
To (all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HERBERT B. SABIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Supports for Game or other Boards; and I do declare the follow ing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in folding supports for game or other boards; and it is embodied in the construction and ar rangement of parts presently to be described, and defined in the claims.
The object of the invention is to provide a very convenient device which can be so adjusted as to take up but little room and which may be used for carrying a boa rd, especially such as game-boards.
In the drawings I have shown a construction which embodies the invention; but it is to be understood that various changes in the details of construction can be made without in the least departing from the general nature and principle of the invention.
Figure l is an elevation of the invention, showing the upper portion in sections. Fig. 2 is atop plan view of the upper portion; and Fig. 3 is a View similar to Fig. 1, showing the stand with the arms folded in.
In the drawings, A represents a post or pillar, which may be of any suitable material, conveniently of wood. On the lower end of the post is fixedly secured a plate B, having three or more eyes or arms 1) extending there from obliquely upward. These arms are each provided with oblong openings 1), through which suitable supporting-rods 0 pass. These rods are of suificient length to constitute legs for the stand and have on their opposite ends enlargements c, the size of the enlargement being such as to prevent the escape of the legs from the plate B. WVith this construction as the legs are drawn out or downward and are forced into an inclined position the Walls of the openings in the arms serve to limit their movement and retain them in an in- Serial No. 56,808. (No model.)
clined position, as will be obvious from the construction shown. By this means a very secure support is formed, acting somewhat in the nature of a tripod and retaining the post in its vertical position. The upper end of the post has a circular chamber a, and in the center of this chamber is a pivot-pin D, secured in a suitable aperture in the post or in any other desirable manner and occupying the central portion of the chamber.
Pivotally supported on the post B is a top plate E, having a boss efashioned to fit loosely in the chamber and having a central bore or cavity into which the end of the pivot-pin projects. By this means the plate E may be rotated and still held in its proper horizontal position. The plate E is provided with three or more outwardly-extending arms 6, each of which is slightly inclined downwardly and is provided with oblong slots or openings 6 Passing loosely through the openings 6 in the plate E are supporting-arms F, the inner ends of which are capped by suitable enlargementsfiwhile the outer ends are capped by enlargements f, which are conveniently coated with or formed of yielding material, such as rubber. When the arms are drawn outward and upward, they will assume an oblique position, their ends being above the plane of the carrying-plate, and they will be held in this position by their engagement with the walls of the slots in the arms of the plate, there being a clutching action at that point. When a boardis placed upon the outer ends of the arms F, they will serve to increase the frictional engagement With the plate-arms, and will thereby form a very secure and Widely-extended supporting-surface for the board, and owing to the pivotal construction above described the board can be turned readily.
When it is desired to fold the support or stand, it will only be necessary to force the rods 0 and F inward, allowing the same to assume a position parallel with the post A. In this position, if necessary or desirable, the legs and supporting-arms can be tied or secured in any convenient manner.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a folding stand, the combination with a supporting-post having a plate on its lower 1 formed with openings therein, and upwardlyend formed with inclined extensions having apertures therein, of legs slidably held in the apertures and provided with suitable enlargements on their ends, a pivoted plate on the upper end of the post, and supporting-arms adjustably carried by the plate, substantially as described.
2. The combination With a supporting-post I having suitable legs, of a pivoted disk on the upper end of the post having at the out-er edge thereof downwardly-inclined extensions extending arms slidably supported in the openings having means at both ends to prevent their eseaping from the openings and yielding supporting devices at their outer ends, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affiX my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
HERBERT B. SABIN.
