Description
Dec. 16, 1947. J. M cKAY SEWING ACCESSORY Filed Sept. 5, 1946 INVENTOR. JoHM MAGKAY Patented Dec. 16, 1947 UNITED srATes PATENT OFFICE Application September 5, 1946,
Serial No. 694,863
8 Claims. (CI'QZ-ZE- -IUG) This invention relates to a sewing aid or accessory.
More particularly stated, the invention --re1ates to a device for facilitating sewing and has for its object to fnake available a variety of spools of thread, different sizes of needles, threading "do vices, and a thread cutter so mounted as *to be readily accessible.
Further objects of the invention will appear from the following specification taken in connection with the drawings which form apart of this application, and in which Fig. 1 is a perspective elevational view of a device constructed in accordance with the invention;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view illustrating a thread cutter; v
Fig. 3 is a perspective view illustrating a threading device; and
Fig. 4 is a perspective view, partly broken away, illustrating a slightly modified form of construction.
In the embodiment of the invention illustrated in the drawings, the device comprises a plate Ill formed of sheet metal, or, if desired, of plastic material, having punched therefrom and bent outwardly from the front surface thereof, a plurality of spool supports or posts ll. These supports are adapted to hold a plurality of different sizes of spools 12 of thread.
The plate In, in the form of the invention shown, has at one edge thereof laterally extending lugs 13 which may be mounted in bearings 14 of a support 15 so that the plate can be folded downwardly or supported in upright position. The supports may, if desired, be provided in a drawer.
In order to support the plate H1 in elevated position, stops it are provided at the two edges thereof.
The plate also has bayonet slots l1 so that the plate can be supported on a wall or upright surface by pins or screws.
Along the upper edge of the plate l0, viewing Fig. 1, the material of the plate is bent inwardly as shown at 20, downwardly as shown at 2 I, and upwardly as shown at 22, to form a channel 23. The upper edge of the portion 22 has formed therein downwardly extending slits 24. The cutter 25 having a cutter notch 26 and a right angle flange 21 is mounted in one of the slits 24, as shown in Fig. 1. In the other slits are mounted threading devices, which in the form of the invention shown comprise portions 25 and 21' disposed at right angles to each other and the Porhen 2% has'securedthereto and projecting therei-romawire having parallel portions 28 and 29, the rear ends of which are secured as shown at so to the portion '26 and the opposite ends of which are flared orben't angularly, as shown at 31 and 32, the outer ends of the portions 28 and 29 being connected or bent at 33.
Attention is-called to the fact that the parallel portions 28 and 29 are of considerable length in order to support a plurality of needles 35, 36 and '31 on each'of the threading devices. These needles may be of different sizes.
The eye of the needle is placed over the outer end 33 of the threading device and the portions 3| and 32 are contracted as the eye is pushed onto the parallel portions 28 and 29. In order to thread the needle the thread T is passed through the loop between the portions 3| and 32 and the needle is then pulled outwardly until it is free of the threading device. The thread will then be disposed in the eye of the needle.
A plurality of threading devices A, B, C and D are mounted in the vertical slits 24 with the portions 21 thereof disposed in the channel 23.
In order to provide a further supply of needles a cushion 40 is supported in lugs 4| and 42 struck out from the material of the sheet or plate 10.
If desired, the threading devices and cutter may be mounted in a separate unit in the form of a clip 45 which is constructed in a manner similar to the portions 20, 2| and 22 above described, but is clipped over the upper edge of the plate Ill. In both forms of the invention the threading devices frictionally held in the channel 23.
= will be understood that the invention is capable of modification and that changes in the construction and in the arrangement of the various cooperating parts may be made without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention, as expressed in the following claims.
What I claim is:
1. A sewing accessory com rising a supporting in said channel, and
plat having a channel at the upper edge thereof, a plurality of spool supports on the plate adjacent the other edge thereof, and a plurality of needle threading devices removably mounted in said channel.
2. A sewing accessory comprising a supporting plate having a channel at the upper edge thereof, a plurality of spool supports integral with and struck out from the material of the plate adjacent the other edge thereof, and a plurality of needle threading devices removably mounted in said channel.
3. A sewing accessory plate, a clip having a channel at the upper edge of the plate, a plurality of spool supports on the plate adjacent the other edge thereof, and a plurality of needle threading devices removably mounted in said channel.
comprising a supporting 4. A sewing accessory comprising a supporting plate having a channel at the upper edge there- -of, a plurality of spool supports on the plate adjacent th other edge thereof, and a plurality of needle threading devices and a thread cutter removably mounted in said channel.-
5. A sewing accessory comprising a support having a channel adjacent one edge, a plurality of needle threading devices removably mounted means for supporting a, plurality of spools of thread in position opposite said threading devices.
6. A sewing accessory comprising a support, a
thread on said support.
8. In .a sewing accessory, a support, and a threading device removably mounted on the support, the connection between the device and support including achannel on one part adapted to removably receive a portion of the other part. Y JOHN MACKAY.
