THREAD STAND Sept.fi30, 1941,
Filed March 15, 1941 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Inventor Bypm I,
A ifomey Patented Sept. 30, 1941 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE THREAD S N 1 I Salvador G. Garcia, Somerset Centre, Mass.
Application March 15, 1941, Serial No. 383,647
2 Claims.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in thread stands particularly for single and multiple needle sewing machines although it will be understood, of course, that the device may be used for any other purpose for which it may be found adapted and desirable.
The primary object of the invention is to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a thread stand of the character described which is adapted to hold a plurality of conical spools of different colors or kinds of thread in position for convenient use at all times by the operator of the machine.
Another very important object of the invention is to provide a multiple thread stand of the aforementioned character which embodies novel means for supporting and frictionally retaining the conical spools whereby full spools may be expeditiously mounted on the device and the empty ones removed therefrom.
Still another very important object of the invention is to provide a multiple thread stand of the character set forth comprising a construction and arrangement which is such that the conical spools of thread mounted thereon will be directed toward the usual guide eyelet of the sewing machine.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a multiple thread stand of the character which will be comparatively simple in construction, strong, durable, highly efficient and reliable in use, compact and which may be manufactured at low cost.
All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a study of the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying'drawings wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and wherein:
Figure l is a perspective view of a multiple thread stand constructed in accordance with the present invention, showing the device mounted on a sewing machine.
Figure 2 is a view in side elevation of the stand.
Figure 3 is a front elevational view.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary view in vertical section, taken substantially on the line 4-4 of Figure 3.
Figure 5 is a view in rear elevation of a portion of the device.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, it will be seen that the embodiment of the invention which has been illustrated comprises a base I which is secured in any suitable manner on a table 2 adjacent the sewing machine 3. The preferred location is to the right rear of the machine 3. Rising from the base I is a post 4. Rigidly mounted on the upper end portion of the post 4 is a forwardly inclined, arcuate plate or panel 5 of suitable metal.
As illustrated to advantage in Figure 4 of the drawings, the plate 5 has formed therein a plurality of openings 6. At spaced points below the openings 6 rearwardly offset tongues 1 are struck from the plate 5 in a manner to leave vertical slots 8 in said plate.
Mounted on the plate 5 is a plurality of substantially V-shaped resilient brackets 9. The free end portions of one of the legs of the brackets 9 are threaded and engaged in the openings 6 where they are firmly secured by nuts ID. The free end portions of the other legs of the brackets 9 extend through the slots 8, in which they are operable, and terminate in comparatively Wide, flattened downturned feet II.
It is thought that the manner in which the device is used will be readily apparent from a consideration of the foregoing. Briefly, the conical spools of thread I2 are forced on the resilient, substantially V-shaped brackets -9 until said spools engage the plate 5. The resilient brackets 9, being thus compressed, are placed under tension in a manner to frictionally grip and firmly retain the spools in position thereon. The free lower end portions of the brackets 9 move in the slots 8 and are prevented from being withdrawn therefrom by the feet I I which are engageable with the back of the plate 5. The feet I I are also engageable with the tongues I for positively preventing the brackets 9 from being forced too far through the slots 8 when pushing the spools on said brackets. The construction and arrangement is such as to prevent the brackets 9 from turning on the plate 5 thereby loosening the nuts II]. By reason of the curvature of the plate 5 all of the spools of thread mounted thereon will be directed toward the usual eyelet I3 of the sewing machine 3, as seen in Figure 1 of the drawings.
It is believed that the many advantages of a multiple thread stand constructed in accordance with the present invention will be readily understood and although a preferred embodiment of the device is as illustrated and described, it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to which will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed is:
1. A thread stand comprising a plate having a slot therein, a substantially V-shaped, resilient bracket having one end secured to the plate and its other end portion operable in the slot, said bracket being engageable in a spool for mounting said spool on the plate, a tongue on the plate in back of v the slot, and a foot on said other end portion of the bracket engageable with the the slot.
2. In a thread stand of the character described, 15
an arcuate plate provided with at least one opening therein, and at least one slot spaced from the opening in the line of curvature of the plate, said plate in the region of the slot having a tongue struck therefrom and overlying the slot at the convex side of the plate, and a spool accommodating bracket embodying a leg having a free end portion engaging in the opening, and a second leg having a free end portion engaging 10 in the slot and provided-with an integral foot disposed at an angle to the second leg and normally engaging the plate at the convex side thereof.
