Description

April 25, 1950 M. INGWER PRESSER FOOT ADAPTER Filed April 1, 1948 IN V EN TOR.
BY i,
Patented Apr. 25, 1956 PRESSER FOOT ADAPTER Max Ingwer, New York, N. Y., assignor to Consolidated Sewing Machine & Supply Co., Inc., New York, N. Y., a corporation of New York Application April 1, 1948, Serial No. 18,361
1 Claim.
The invention herein disclosed relates to presser foot constructions.
Objects of the invention are to enable the use of a more modern type of presser foot on certain of the older type sewing machines.
Particularly it is a purpose of the invention to enable the use of a Singer type presser foot on sewing machines of the older Wheeler- Wilson form of construction.
Special objects are to provide the necessary adapter for this purpose in a simple, inexpensive and easily attached form.
Other desirable objects and the novel features of construction through which the purposes of the invention are attained are set forth or will appear in the course of the following specification.
The drawing accompanying and forming part of the specification illustrates a practical commercial embodiment of the invention. Structure, however, may be modiiied and changed as regards the immediate illustration, all within the true intent and broad scope of the invention as hereinafter dened and claimed.
Fig. 1 in the drawing is a broken perspective View illustrating the special adapter applied to a sewing machine of the older type and carrying a presser foot of the more modern form of construction;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged perspective View of the adapter alone;
Fig. 3 is a broken side elevation of the adapter and presser foot as connected with the presser bar;
Fig. 4 is a front view of the same;
Fig. 5 is a horizontal cross-sectional View as on substantially the plane of line 5-5 of Fig. 4.
In Fig. 1 portions of one of the older sewing machines of the Wheeler-Wilson type are shown, including the presser bar l slotted in its lower end at 8 and provided with a clamp screw 9.
The presser foot originally or formerly provided for such a presser bar consisted of a plate insertable in the slot 8, held by the screw 9 and having a foot structure oiset an appreciable distance in front of the presser bar.
VThe adapter of the present invention comprises a base plate I0 to t in the slot 8 having spaced ears II at the upper end to stand at opposite sides of the presser bar, an opening I2 through the lower end and a forwardly angled arm I3 at one edge carrying a mounting for the newer type presser foot.
Specifically the arm I3 is shown as an integrally extended portion of one edge of the base plate bent forwardly and extended downwardly on an incline and carrying at its forward portion a block I4 angled at opposite sides at I5 to accommodate correspondingly angled side portions IG, I'I, of the yoke I8 having the presser foot formation I9 at this lower end.
The wedge faced block I4'is shown as a separate piece welded or otherwise secured over the face of the downwardly extended arm I3 and as provided with a screw seat 20 for the thumb screw 2| securing the presser foot over the face of the block.
The newer type presser foot I 8, I9, is of relatively short forward extent, making it possible to interpose the adapter structure in the space allowed between the presser bar 'I and the needle bar 22, and the downward extent of the old style presser bar allows suiicient space vertically for the disposition of the mounting block I4 and the clamping screw 2I required for the newer form presser foot. This vertical spacing also allows for the use of the newer presser foot having the slot 23 in the side I6 to pass about the shank 24 of the clamping screw.
Hence the adapter disclosed permits the new type presser foot to be rocked into its position over the wedge block I4 in the same manner that it is used on the newer Singer sewing machines, with the slot 23 passing over the shank of the screw, once it has been loosened to permit such movement.
The adapter disclosed can be quickly applied to the presser bar of an old style machine upon removing the screw 9 and slipping the base plate I 0 up into position in the slotted presser bar and then replacing the screw, as illustrated in Fig. 1.
Then one of the newer presser feet can be mounted after clamp screw 2l is loosened, by simply rocking it into position over the wedge block into the fully engaged location illustrated, after which the clamp screw can be tightened to firmly secure the presser foot in position.
The invention thus, at small expense, enables a modern type presser foot to be quickly and easily 3 Dplied to an older form of sewing machine and which except for the presser foot construction, may be in fully eicient operating condition.
What is claimed is:
The herein disclosed adapter for enabling the application of a presser foot of the type having a divergent sided straddle type mounting yoke to a sewing machine having a split form of presser bar and comprising a base plate shaped to t into and be secured in a split presser bar, a rigid arm projecting forwardly from one edge of said base plate substantially at a right angle thereto,
kand a rigid mounting block projecting' from the inner face of said arm toward the opposite' edge of the base plate, said mounting blocking having. l5 v "12511413 relatively inclined sides convergent toward said opposite edge of the base plate to accommodate the divergent sides of a straddle type presser foot mounting yoke and provided with a screw seat to accommodate a clamping screw for securing such a yoke in position thereon.
