Description

July 17, 1923o L. A. AMES:

mm 30mm AND SUPPORT THEREFOR Filed July 1 1927 Patented July 17, 1928.

Louis ANNIN AMES,

,IELAGHOLDER AND Application filed July 1,

This invention appertains to improve-r ments in supporting means for flags or the like.

An object of the invention is to provide in conjunction with the holder for a flag or the like, a clamping device adapted for attach mentto a post whereby the holder is disposed in service on the post in a position toreceive the flag or other supported member and to support and display the same.

Another object of the invention resides in the provision of a construction of the above character in which the holdermay be adjusted on the clamping device and may as sumo any desired position on the periphery of the post. r

A further object of the invention is to pro duce an arrangement whereby any desired number of holders may be attached to the postby the clamping device so that a plurality of flags or like devices may be displayed on the post.

The invention furtheraims to improve the construction of the holder with a view to rendering it very simple and etlicient and to provide a. holder for firmly and securely maintaining the flag'or other supported 7, member in service position and for permit- '1 ting the ready attachment and detachment of the supported member. 7

The holder is in many respects similar to that disclosed in my pending application for patent, Serial No. 174,812, filed March 12, 1927, but the construction has been somewhat changed in order to adapt the holder for the use in mind,

Other objects and advantages .of this invention will appear as the description proceeds.

In the drawings:

Figure 1 is a fragmental View of a post showing the disposition of a plurality of holders thereon and the manner in which the invention is carried out in practise;

Figure 2 is a sectional plan view of a detail of the invention;

Fig. 3 is an isolated side elevationalview partly in section of the preferred form of holder, showing the supported member in dotted lines; V

Figure 4 is a side elevational view of a fragment of the construction, the view being taken looking upward at Figure 2; and

Figure 5 is a front elevational view looking at Figure 3 from the right.

Referring now more particularly to the QENEWYYORK, :N. Y. sU-rPoR'r T R FOR.

192,7. "SeriaI No. 202,304v

drawings in whichis'shown the preferred embodiment of the invention and'to the details of which I do not ,intend to be confined,

the invention is illustrated as exemplified in a construction which comprises a post '10, on

which is disposed a holder for. a flag or the like, the holder being generally indicated by the nun1era l,11. :One or more of such holders may be arranged on or around the post. Each holder comprises arfiat portion 12 adapted for -disposition"against the side of the post and'to be clampedin place there- 1 on and attached thereto.

The clamping means preferably'c-omprise a band 13 extending around the periphery of' the ,post'and placed under tension thereon,

said'band preferably extending through a member 14. in the nature of a keeper struck out from theffiat'portion 12 of the holder. The band being under tension is thus maintained in service on the post andserves to maintain the fiat portion 12 of the" holder flat against the periphery'of-the post.

Any desired or suitable means may befemployed for placing the band. under tension;

In the particularembodiment selectedfor illustration, the free ends ofthe bands terminate adjacent eachother and each has an Lshaped member 15 with a slot 16 throughwhich the respective end of the band passes and is bent back, thereby securing the L- shaped member thereto. The L-sh'apedmem bers are drawn together by means such as a bolt 17, which, when tightened, serves to place the band under tension and to' firmly maintain it in service place on the post.

By reference to Figures 3 and 5, itwill be seen that in the preferred embodiment of the invention the flat portion 12 of the holder merges into a portion 18 preferably eX- tending at an acute angle to the Hat portion.

position at the desired loo turn terminates in a' portion 20 extending a back on the portion18and having a free' end 21 which is preferably slightly curved.

The portion 19 has an opening 22 through I which the end of a'flag or other supported member is adapted to be inserted. This supported member is firmly and resiliently held by the resilient action of the portion 20 which forces it firmly against the side 18 of the holder. The provision of the curved part, 21, serves to distribute the resilient action of the member 20 uniformly over a 23 into which the su ported member in the holder. he

considerable length of the supported member and the force is not concentrated at a single point.

The portion also preferably. has a slot artially fits when place purpose of the slot 23 is to prevent turning, twisting, or wiggling of the supported member when'inserted in the holder. The slot is smaller in width than the supported member throughout the major portion of its length, but has slightly enlarged part 23 at itsbottom into which .the tip of the supported memberextends. 15 In conjunction with this construction a catch or the like 24 may be used, one end of which has an eyelet 25 extending through a perforation near the top of the part 12 and the other end has a hook 26 adapted for cooperation with aslot 27 in the part 19, the catchserving to prevent the parts'12 and 18 of the holder spreading apart and the holder sagging under the weight of the sup ortedmember. Of course, any other des red member or means may be employed to obtain this result.

The use of a band surrounding the post "and the method of attaching the flag holder to the band enables the holder to be slid on the band and to be adjusted and placed at any desired point on the periphery thereof and any desired number of holders maybe arranged on the band. The specific construction of holder used permits easy and ready attachment or detachment of the supported members or flags atwill and in additionprovides a very cheap, economical and efficient device.' Other types of holders may be employed, however, in the practice otthe in-.

vention and I do not confine myself to the specific construction disclosed nor to any etails described above.

Various alterations and changes may be made in the structure and arrangement disclosed without departing -from the spirit of What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. A holder of the class described .comprising a substantially straight portion, :1 portion extending back on said straight por-- tion and ada-pted to clamp a supported member against the straight portion, the second portion having a slot for the partial accommodation of the supported member, and a portion connecting the aforesaid portions, said portionjhaving an opening through which the'supported' member extends.

2. A holder of the class described comprising a flat portion, means for attaching said fiat portion in service, a portion extending angularly from said flat portion and having its end bent back so as to clamp a supported member against the body of the angular portion, and meansfor preventing spreading of the angular portion with respect to the flat portion under the weight of the supported member.

3. A holder of the class described cornprising a flat portion, means for attaching the flat portion in service, a portion extending angularly from the flat portion and having its end bent back and adapted to clamp a supported member against the body of the angular portion, and an element as sociated with the flat portion and adapted .to engage the angular portion to limit the amount of separation of the angular portion with respect to the flat portion.

In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification this 29th day of June, 1927.
