STOVE-BOARD.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GRACE PrEIL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stove-Boards, of which the following is a specification.

The object of this invention is to construct a stove board having a wooden base and an asbestos top united to the base, the base formed of strips having a tongue and groove connection with a cross strip which makes a rigid base.

In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a top plan view of my improved stove board. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a section on dotted line a a Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a section on dotted line b b Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a section on dotted line 0 0 Fig. 2.

The base is formed of an edging composed of the ends 1 and sides 2 secured together in any suitable manner. Each end 1 is formed with a groove 3 in its inner edge, and each of the sides 2 is formed with a groove 4 in its inner edge.

A center strip of wood 5 has each edge formed with a groove 6, and a tongue 7 projecting from each end. The tongues 7 of the center strip are located in the grooves l of the sides 2.

Strips 8 have each end formed with a tongue 9 and these tongues are located in the groove 3 of the ends 1, and the grooves 6 of the center strip 5. The center strip 5 extending cross-wise of the strips 8 prevents the strips 8 from warping thereby producing a fiat base.

The upper edges of the ends 1 and sides 2 are rounded, and are recessed forming a seat for the asbestos top 10 which is glued or united to the edging and to the top surface of the strips 5 and 8.

By locating the asbestos in the reduced portion of the edging, it will be protected from tearing and injury, as the lower section of the edging projecting flush or beyond the asbestos top will receive hard usage, and the rounded upper surface of the edging will prevent the asbestos from cracking.

I claim as my invention:

1. A stove board, comprising an edging, a center strip connecting opposite sides of the edging and having its face flush with the same, said edging and strip having grooves in their inner sides, two sets of transversely disposed strips, the strips of each set being located side by side between the center strip and one of the opposite sides of the edging, said transverse strips having their upper faces flush with the edging and center strip and having terminal tongues engaged in the grooves, and a covering extending over the upper face of the board and having its edge set in flush with the marginal face of the edging and terminating short of the outer edge thereof, leaving said outer edge of the edging exposed.

2. A stove board, comprislng a base having its upper margins and edges rounded, said rounded margins being also recessed, the recesses terminating short of the outermost edges of the base, and a protective sheet covering the upper face of the base and having its margins curved downwardly and fitted upon the rounded margins of the base with its edges seated in the recesses thereof and substantially flush with the face of the base edges outside the recesses, said edges of the base below the protective sheet being exposed and thereby constituting protective means for the edges of the sheet.
