To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, BERNHABD HOLZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bufialo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Closet-Seats, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to an improved seat for water-closets and the object is to materially strengthen the construction thereof.

Heretofore closet seats were either constructed of one piece of wood or of several sections, with the grain running in one direction or in several different directions. My improved seat differs in that it comprises two or more superimposed sections which are bent or formed to the substantially-oval shape of the seat and securely locked together at their ends. By this construction the grain does not extend in a straight direction, but in an oval direction following the bend of the wood sections, and thus greatly strengthens the seat.

It also relates to certain details of construction, all of which will be fully and clearly hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a top plan view of the seat, the tongued joints being shown by dotted lines. In my improved form as shown in the drawings 1, 2, and 3 designate, respectively, the inner, outer, and middle sections, which are bent or formed in a substantially-oval shape and tongued and grooved, substantially as shown in Fig. 2, the inner section 1 being provided with a longitudinal groove 4, the outer section 2 with a longitudinal tongue 5, and the middle section 3 with a tongue 6 upon one side and a groove 7 upon the other, the tongue 5 upon the outer section fitting in the groove 7 in the middle section and the tongue 6 upon the middle section into the groove 4: of the in ner section. It is obvious, however, that a series of tongues and grooves may be employed, the relative positions of the tongues and grooves may be changed, or they may be differently arranged, without departing from the nature of my invention. The ends of the middle section do not meet, but are separated from each other by a short locking portion 8, which is substantially a duplicate in crosssection of said middle section, with the exception that the lower tongue portion is removed. At the meeting ends of the inner section the groove is deepened, and instead of being cut in a curved direction is out directly across, substantially as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, and a thin strip of wood 9, having a substantiallyflat bottom edge and a curved upper edge corresponding in shape to the curve of the outer edge of the inner section, is inserted in the groove thus strengthening and locking the two ends of the inner section together. I may construct the strip 9 in one integral piece In constructing the seat the several sections are formed or bent into the required shape, the strip 9 is inserted in the deepened slot in the ends of the inner section, the middle section is placed around the inner section, the two sections being secured together by glue or other means, and the two ends of the middle .section being preferably secured to the inner section by screws 10 the short locking portion 8 is then placed in position and secured by glue or screws 11, and finally the outer section is placed around the partiallycompleted' seat and secured in place by glue and the screws 12. The edges of the seat are then formed in the required shape and the article is smoothed, polished, and varnished.
