Definitions

  • M y invention consists in the attachment of a sponge, A, to the ordinary polishing-brush B, instead'of the sinall brush which is commonly used.

For, in put-ting on blacking or stovepolisli with the sponge instead of a. stiff brush of bristles, all spattering of surrounding objects is avoided, and the sponge being soft and yielding, the polish can be more easily applied in the hollows and corners between the reliefs of the cast-ing than with the blush. Again, the polish may he applied to the stove whether the latter be hot or cold, as the sponge will not readily burn or char.

Description

Mrs/Wan# N.FETERS, PHOTO-L YHOGRAFHER t eine entre AUGUSTA N. THOMPSON, OF HOLYOKE, MASSAOHUSETTS- Letters Patent No. 96,165, lated October 26, 1869.
IVLPROVED BLACKINGJBR'U'SH.
The Schedu1e.refen'ed to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom. lit may concern:
Be it known that I, Mrs. AUGUSTA N. THOMPSON, of Holyoke, Hampden county', State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and improved Blacking-Brnsh; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and clear description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to th'e letters of reference marked thereon.
. In the drawings, the figure represents a. side View of my improved blacking-brush.
M y invention consists in the attachment of a sponge, A, to the ordinary polishing-brush B, instead'of the sinall brush which is commonly used.
The brush, so formed, is intended to be used, more particularly, in blacking and polishing stoves, and has many advantages over the brush in common use for that purpose.
The manner of att-aching the sponge is shown in the drawings. rlhe wire a, passing through the sponge-r absorbed into the sponge equally throughout, and dissolves the blacking equally also. But this is not the case with a brush, as no absorption takes place when it is dipped into water, but the surface only is wetted and a small portion of the blocking dissolved, and that washes ofi', leaving a hard cake of blacking in the middle of the brush, thereby destroying all its elasticity.
Now, having described my invention,
That I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
Au improvement in stove-blackiug brush, the arrangement and connection of the sponge with its staple a, knob 1J, in combination with brush B, as shown and described. y
MRS. AUGUSTA N. THOMPSON.
