To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PATRICK FRANCIS DENNING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Guyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Name-Holder for Pews, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in name holders for pews.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of name holders for pews, and to provide a simple, ornamental and practical name holder, adapted to correspond with the beautiful pews now being installed in modern churches, and designed for use in places where the names are frequently changed, and capable of displaying the name in a conspicuous position and of enabling it to be conveniently read without stooping. A further object of the inven tion is to provide a name holder of this character adapted to permit a name to be changed without detaching the holder from the pew, and capable of preventing children from obtaining access to the name card contained within it.
The invention also has for its object to provide a name holder, adapted to be ap plied to a pew in a variety of positions, and presenting smooth exterior faces, so as not to catch the garments of persons entering and leaving the pews.
Vith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction and novel combination of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out in the claims here to appended; it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction, within the scope of the claims, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

The name holder, which is preferably constructed of sheet metal, is designed in practice to be finished to conform to the trim mings of the pews, and it may be covered with enamel, celluloid or other material, or may be plated in gold or silver, and it comprises a supporting bracket 1, and a marginal frame 2 detachably secured on the supporting bracket for holding a name card 3 and a plate 1 of glass, or other transparent material on the supporting bracket. The supporting bracket is composed of a top supporting plate or member 5, an inclined bottom side 6 and inclined sides or ends 7 the bottom side, ends and top forming substantially a tapering casing. The opposite walls 7 of the casing may be termed either sides or ends, as the casing is designed to be constructed in various sizes and the top may be either square or oblong.
The top plate or member, which constitutes the top and front of the bracket, is designed to be arranged at an angle of about forty-five degrees in order to hold the name card is a conspicuous position to enable the same to be conveniently read without stooping, and it is provided at its lower edge with upwardly projecting inclined lugs 8, spaced apart and adapted to retain the name card and the glass on the inclined plate or member to prevent the glass from falling to the floor and breaking when the retaining frame 2 is removed. The upwardly projecting lugs, which are arranged at right angles to the plane of the supporting plate or member 5, are formed integral with the same. The lugs are formed by a pair of transverse cuts and a longitudinal cut, which partially severs the metal, and the partially severed portion is bent upward, as clearly shown in Fig.

The supporting bracket is open at its back or inner side contiguous to the pew 9, and the top plate or member 5 is provided with a central depending attaching lug 10, which is cut from the plate or member 5. The attaching lug is formed by a pair of transverse cuts or incisions and a curved connecting cut. The lug 10 is bent downwardly and then inwardly, the lower portion being arranged at a slight angle to the upper portion, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawings, and the opening 11 formed by the said cuts affords access to the lug 10,which is provided with a perforation for the reception of a screw for securing a name holder to the pew. The opening 11 permits the blade of a screw driver to be readily placed contiguous to the depending lug 10 for engaging the screw.
When the bracket is constructed of a single piece of sheet metal, as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, the ends 7 are provided at their upper edges with inwardly extending flanges 12, which are secured to the lower face of the top plate or member. The sheet metal is bent longitudinally to form the top plate or member 5, and the lower side 6 and the terminal portions of the latter are bent inwardly to form the ends 7. The lower side 6 is provided at its inner edge with a depending attaching flange 13, which'is provided with perforatlons for the reception of screws for securing the name holder to the pew.
The frame 2, which is removable and reversible, is oblong and its sides and ends are L-shaped in cross section to provide inwardly extending top flanges 14, which project over the upper face of the top plate or member 5 and engage the transparent plate 4:. The upper portion 15 of the side 6 and the upper portions 16 of the ends 7 are arranged at an angle to the lower portions of the said side and ends and are disposed at right angles to the plane of the top plate or member to form an upper oblong portion to receive the frame 2. The bottom side and ends of the frame fit flat against the upper portions 15 and 16 of the sides 6 and the ends 7, and the frame is retained on the supporting bracket by means of a pair of concealed spring catches 17, secured to the inner faces of the ends 7 of the bracket. Each spring consists of a strip of flat metal having its upper end 18 bent at an angle and provided with a lug 19, pressed from the,- spring and connected at the top and sides to the same. The lug 19, which extends through an opening 7* of the end of the casing, is pressed outwardly and arranged at an angle to present an inclined outer face and a lower edge, which is formed by cutting entirely through the metal of the spring. The lug is adapted to automatically engage the frame, when the latter is placed on the bracket. The frame is provided at the inner faces of its ends with re cesses 20, formed by pressing the metal outward and arranged to be engaged by the projecting lugs of the spring catches. The spring catches are secured to the ends 7 by means of upper loops 21 and lower projections 22. The loops 21, which extend transversely of the spring, are formed integral with the ends by partially severing a narrow strip of metal and bending the same inward. The spring 17 extends through the loop and is provided at its lower end with a slot 23, which is detachably engaged by the projections 22. The projection 22 is also formed integral with the end 7 by partially severing it from the end and bending it inward. The frame is adapted to be detached from either end by pressing the spring inwardly at a point below the frame, suitable apertures 24 being provided for this purpose. The interiorly arranged catches will prevent children from tampering with the name cards,
and they enable the card to be removed and changed without detaching the name holder from the pew. As the frame may be unlocked from either end of the name holder, the device may be applied to a pew in a variety of positions and at either end of the same.
In Figs. 6 to 13 inclusive is illustrated the preferred embodiment of the invention, in which the clamping frame 25 for securing the name card and the glass on the supporting bracket 26 is hinged at one end, and is detachably secured at the other end by means of an interiorly arranged key-operated locking device. The supporting bracket is of the form heretofore described, and the clamping frame is provided at one end with an integral eye 27, which engages a pintle portion 28 of the adjacent end of the supporting bracket. The hinge element or eye 27 is formed integral with the frame 25, being cut and bent into approximately cylindrical form. The pintle portion 28, which is integral with the supporting bracket, is connected with the same by approximately cylindrical end portions 29 of greater diameter than the pintle portion. The end portions 29 and the intermediate pintle portion 28 are formed by partially cutting the metal from the supporting bracket and rolling or bending the partially severed portion. The intermediate pintle portion is also severed from the supporting bracket at the top, and is cut at the ends to enable it to be bent or rolled into approximately cylindrical form and slightly smaller than the end portions 29. The intermediate pintle portion receives the eye 27 of the frame, and when the said eye 27 is bent around the pintle portion, the
frame is hinged to the bracket, and is adapted to swing upward therefrom to afford access to the name card. While it is preferable to construct the hinge elements integral with the supporting bracket and the frame, it will be readily apparent that the frame may be hinged to the bracket in any other preferred manner. The other end of the hinged clamping frame is provided with an interior recess 30, formed by pressing the metal outward and adapted to be engaged by the outer end of a slidable bolt 31, mounted in inner and outer transverse guide loops 32 and 33. The transverse guide loops, which are located at the lower face of the top plate or member of the bracket, are cut and pressed from the top plate or member of the supporting bracket, and the bolt, which is oblong, is constructed of sheet metal and is provided at an intermediate point with integral spaced lugs 34, formed by cutting and bending the metal downward, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 12 of the drawings. The lugs are adapted to be engaged by a key 35 for reciprocating the bolt, and the inner guide 32 is arranged in the path of the inner lug, and is adapted to form a stop for the same to prevent the bolt from being thrown inward beyond the reach of the key. The outward movement of the bolt is limited by the outer wall of the recess 30 of the hinged frame. The supporting bracket is provided with a key hole 36, and the top plate or member has an integral depending key-centering and bolt-guiding lug 37, located between the guide loop and formed by cutting and bending the metal of the said top plate or member downward. The bolt is provided with a central longitudinal slot 38 to straddle the depending lug 37, and the outer transverse loop is provided with a slot 39 to form a passage-way for the lugs 34 in assembling the parts. The depending guide lug is provided with a conical bearing 40, having a central opening to receive the inner end of the key and forming a guidefor the same. The conical bearing is located below the bolt, and the depending lug 37 by being arranged in the slot 38 of the bolt assists in guiding the latter.
The key is adapted to be introduced through the key hole 36 in the ordinary manner, and its inner end is centered by the conical bearing of the lug. It is then adapted to be rotated for moving the bolt inward or outward. The bit of the key engages the inner lug 34 for moving the bolt backward or inward, and it engages the end of the spaced lugs 34 for sliding the bolt outwardly into engagement with the hinged clamping member. The bracket is provided adjacent to the recess 32 with an opening 41, through which the engaging end of the bolt extends. The locking mechanism is concealed within the supporting bracket and is inaccessible to and will prevent children from tampering with the name card.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A name holder for pews, etc., including a bracket consisting of a casing and composed of a substantially rectangular supporting portion inclined to the vertical, and constituting the top and front of the casing, a bottom extending rearwardly from the supporting portion, and sides also extending rearwardly from the said supporting portion, a marginal frame fitted on the supporting portion for retaining a name card and a transparent plate thereon, and fixed lugs projecting upwardly from the lower edge of the supporting portion to prevent the name card and the transparent plate from sliding off the bracket when the frame isdetached.
2. A name holder of the class described including a supporting bracket provided with an inclined name card receiving plate or member having projecting lugs at the lower edge, a frame fitted on the bracket and concealing the lugs and adapted to retain a name card on the plate or member, and interiorly arranged means for locking the frame on the bracket.
3. A name holder of the class described including a supporting bracket consisting of a casing composed of an oblong top name card supporting portion, a bottom, ends con necting the top portion and the bottom, and an attaching portion arranged at an angle to the top supporting portion, an oblong frame fitted on the upper portion of the casing, and interiorly arranged locking means for retaining the frame on the casing.
4. A name holder of the class described including a bracket consisting of a casing having a top name card receiving portion and provided at the lower edge with upwardly projecting lugs, said top portion being also provided with a depending attaching lug cut from the said top portion and forming an opening to afford access to the said attaching lug, and a frame fitted on the bracket for retaining a name card on the top portion thereof.
5. A name holder of the class described comprising a supporting bracket consisting of a casing having a top name card receiving portion and provided below the same with an opening, a marginal frame fitted on the bracket, and an interiorly arranged locking device mounted on the casing and arranged to project through the opening to engage the frame.
6. A name holder of the class described including a bracket consisting of a casing composed of a top name card supporting portion inclined to the vertical constituting the front of the casing, an approximately horizontal bottom arranged at an angle to the top supporting portion, ends connecting the top supporting portion and the bottom, and an attaching portion located at the back of the casing and arranged at an angle to the top supporting portion, and a frame fitted on the top supporting portion for detachably securing a name card thereon.
7. A name holder of the class described including a supporting bracket constructed of sheet metal and having a name cardreceiving portion and provided with an integral pintle cut from the bracket and bent into an approximately cylindrical form, said bracket being also provided with integral supporting portions of greater diameter than the pintle and partially severed from the same and connectin the pintle with the bracket, and a frame fitted on the bracket and provided with an integral eye arranged on the pintle between the said supporting portions, whereby the frame is hinged to the bracket.
8. In combination with a name card and a transparent plate, a. name holder of the class described including a casing having a supporting portion inclined to the vertical and provided at its lower edge with upwardly extending lugs adapted to prevent the name card and the transparent plate from sliding oif the supporting portion, a frame fitted on the casing and concealing the lugs and adapted to retain the name card and the transparent plate thereon, and concealed locking means for securing the frame on the casing.
9. A name holder of the class described including a supporting bracket constructed of sheet metal and consisting of a namecard receiving portion inclined to the vertical constituting the to and the front of the bracket, ends extending rearward from the said name card receiving portion, a bot tom connected with the endsand with the supporting portion, and an attaching portion located at the back of the bracket and arranged at an angle to the said supporting portion, an open marginal frame fitted on the bracket and concealing the opening thereof and hinged to the bracket, said frame being provided opposite the opening with an interior recess, and an interior bolt carried by the bracket and arranged to extend through the said opening for engaging the recess of the same.
10. A name holder of the class described including a supporting bracket having an attaching portion and having a top name card receiving portion provided at the lower face thereof with guide loops and having a key centering lug, a bolt slidable in the loops and arranged to be operated by the key, and an open marginal frame fitted on the bracket and engaged by the bolt.
11. A name holder of the class described including a supporting bracket having a top name card receiving portion provided with a key hole and having a key centering device depending from the top of the bracket and provided with a bearing located opposite the key hole, said bracket being also provided at the lower face of the top with guiding means, a frame fitted on the bracket, and'a key operated bolt slidable in the said guiding means for engaging the frame.
12. A name holder of the class described including a bracket having a top name card receiving portion and provided at the lower face thereof with guiding means and having a key hole, said bracket being also provided with a key centering lug depending from the top of the bracket and having a tapered bearing located opposite the key hole, a frame fitted on the bracket, and a bolt slidable in the guides to engage the frame and provided with spaced lugs arranged to be engaged by a key for actuating the bolt.
13. A name holder of the class described including a bracket having a name card receiving portion and provided with spaced guides and having a combined guiding and key centering lug, a frame fitted on the bracket, and a bolt slidable in the said guides to engage the frame and having a longitudinal slot receiving the said lug.
14. A name holder of the class described including a bracket provided with spaced guides and having a combined bolt guiding and key centering lug located betweenthe guides, said bracket being also provided opposite the lug with a key hole, a frame fitted on the bracket, and a bolt slidable in the guides to engage the frame and provided with a longitudinal slot receiving the lug, said bolt being also provided with spaced lugs arranged to be engaged by a key.
15. A name holder of the class described including a bracket provided with spaced guides, one of the guides being provided with a slot, said bracket also having a key centering lug, a frame fitted on the bracket, and a bolt slidable in the uides to engage the frame and provided with lugs adapted to be operated by a key and arranged to pass through the said slot in assembling the parts, one of the lugs being arranged to engage the other guide to limit the inward movement of the bolt.
16. A name holder of the class described including a bracket provided at one end with an opening and having inner and outer guides arranged in alinement with the opening, the outer guide being provided with a slot, a frame fitted on the bracket and provided at the said opening with an interior recess and hinged at the other end to the frame, and a bolt slidable in the guides to engage the frame and provided with spaced key operated lugs adapted to pass through the said slot in assembling the parts, one of the lugs being arranged to engage the inner guide for limiting the inward movement of the bolt, the outward movement of the bolt being limited by the frame.
17. A name holder for pews, etc., including a supporting bracket consisting of a casing composed of a substantially rectangular supporting portion inclined to the vertical and constituting the top and front of the casing, an approximately horizontal bottom extending rearwardly from the supporting portion rearwardly converging ends connected with the supporting portion and with the bottom, and an attaching portion located at the back of the bracket and arranged at 15 an angle to the supporting portion thereof, and means for retaining a name card on the supporting portion.
