Description
P. G. WHITE. MATGH SAFE.
APPLICATION IILBD rnn.s.19o7.
908,923. Patented Jan. 5, 1909.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK G. WHITE, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO HENRY D. LEWIS, OF
. CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
MATCH-SAFE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jams, 1909.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK G. WHITE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Match-Safes, of which the following is a clear, full, and exact de scription.
My invention relates to match safes and more particularly to that type in which a number of matches are placed in a holder or reservoir and dispensed therefrom not more than one at a time to the user.
In cigar stores, drug stores, and other public places it has become a nuisance as well as an item of expense to provide matches for smokers, for when a box is placed on the counter customers are generally not content to take one or two matches but help themselves to a handful. Such reckless approriation of matches requires the constant reling of match boxes, and involves quite an expense, which would be avoided if the smoker could take only one match at a time.
The object of my invention is to provide a match-safe by the use of which this annoyance will be avoided and the expense of supplying matches materially reduced.
Another object is to so construct the device that the end of a cigar may be automatically cut at the same time the match is being delivered from the reservoir. This I accomplish by the means hereinafter fully described and as more particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings :-Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved match safe. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section thereof taken on dotted line 2-2, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1 having the front-plate removed to disclose the operating mechanism for elevating and dispensing the matches.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a base-plate of any suitable desi n from about the center of which is mounted a standard B consisting of a vertical plate for supporting the improved match safe. The front face'of this plate is either cut away or its vertical side edges are provided with marginal beads a, a, so that when closed by a removable front-plate C a narrow space will be left between the two in which the match expelling mechanism is housed, as will-hereinafter be more fully described. Made integral with the upper portion of the standard B and extending to the rear of the vertical plane thereof isa suitable match compartment D of any desired shape in cross section but pro vided with an inclined bottom 9 that is arranged at an angle inclined to the said standard B. The rear of this compartment is cut away as shown, and is normally closed by a segmental hood-shaped door E secured to the end-walls by suitable pivots so that it will close itself by gravity. The front of the compartment is closed by the upper portion of the front-plate C that extends up to the top of the box and is provided with a horizontally elongated slot for the exit of the matches.
The means for expelling the matches one at a time from the reservoir consist of a slide F mounted and reciprocating vertically in the space formed between the front-plate C and the standard above described. Said slide is adapted to be raised and lowered through the medium of a goose-neck or S- shaped operating lever G that has its inner end g provided with an enlargement that is seated in and articulates with the edges of a suitable cut recess f in the face of said slide. Lever G is pivoted mediate its ends between two lugs b, c, projecting from the side edge of the front-plate and standard respectively. The top edge of slide F rises just to the lowermost portion of the match compartment when in its normal position and is preferably beveled or grooved outwardly sufficiently to provide a seat for a single match. When lever G is depressed the slide is raised and the match seated in the groove is elevated until it reaches the elongated slot e at the top of the compartment when it will roll off the upper edge of the slide and gravitate through said opening into a suitable trough-shaped basket H that is provided at the top of the front-plate C just below said slot.
The pivot lug 1) preferably extends a slight distance beyond and below the pivot of lever G and has a countersunk opening it therein and said lever is rovided with a cutter-blade or sharpened e go h, which as said lever is depressed passes close to said opening and will shear the end of a cigar inserted in opening it simultaneously with the delivery of a match from the compartment.
If desired the shape and construction of the match compartment may be changed.
