VICTOR G. MOSS, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE CHAMPION REGISTER COM- PANY, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO.
MILK-130mm HOLDER.
' Application filed July 12,
The present improvements, relating, as indicated, to milk bottle holders, have as a principal object the provision of a simple and inexpensive device for household use which will be adapted to receive one or more milk bottles when delivered and retain same in securely sealed condition until the householder is ready for same. Pro vision 1s furthermore made, when deslred,
for locking the holder after the bottle has been placed therein so as to prevent removal except by the properparty.
To the accomplishment of the foregoing and related ends, the invention, then, consists of the means hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims, the annexed drawing and the following description setting forth in detail certain mechanism embodying the invention,
such disclosed means constituting, however,
therein and Fi .4 is a view similar to" Fig. 3, but showing the device closed.
As illustrated in the drawing (see particularly Fig. 1), the device is adapted to receive two milk bottles, but if desired, may of course be. readily made to accommodate only one or more than two. Essentially the device comprises only two members, viz, a base member 1 and a cover member 2 that is Ipivotally attached to said base member. oth members are preferably stamped up from sheet metal of pro er gauge, the base member consisting o a flat plate with an integral downturned portion 3 for the purpose of attachment to a wall or equivalent support, the horizon tally extending portion-of the plate being formed with recesses 40f the pro er size and shape to permit the neck of a s andard milk bottle to be inserted therein and be supported thereby, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4. Said base member is further provided with an upturned flange 5 at each end, and, where it is desired to-employ a lock, with 1924. Serial No. 725,558.
to such flanges at points 8 adjacent their rear ends. The inner or rear wall 9 of the cover is cut short at each end to clear the flanges 5 and is of the proper depth so as to .also swing just clear of base 1 when the cover is closed. \Vhere a lock 10 is-employed, such lock is attached to the cover just inside the front wall 11 thereof and in position to register with tongue 6 on the base. Only the key opening 12 of such lock is accordingly exposed when the cover is-closed (see Fig. 2).
The horizontal portion of base 1, as best shown in Figs. 3 and 4, is slightly inclined rearwardly and downwardly. with respect to the vertical portion 3 by means of which the device is secured to the side wall of a building, porch column or like support. Accordingly, even where the bottles are hastily inserted in recesses 4, they will tend to remain in place or even to slide back to the rear of such recesses so as to permit the cover 2 to be closed. Where a lock is employed, it will be of sprin pressed type so as to automatically secure the cover to the base upon the cover being thusswung downwardly. The space between the base and the cover when the latter is closed is just sufiicient to accommodate the beaded por- .tion of the bottle neck so that the cover will constitute an effective seal, preventing both dust and insects from getting onto the cap of the bottle. Obviously the bottle end Wlll be inaccessible to roving cats and dogs.
My improved holder, it will thus be seen,
is not only simplein construction and rela- 10o tively inexpensive "to manufacture, but at the same time afiords substantial protection. Of equalimportance from the stand-. point of practicability it is, if anything,
more convenient for the person delivering the milk bottles to place them in such. holder than to set them down in the usualmanner on a door-step. The device can, moreover, be attached to the wall at a convenient elevation so that it will not be.
necessary to stoop over to place a bottle therein, and by placing the empty bottles in the holder for collection, the task of delivering milk bottles will be much reduced.
Other -modes of applying the principle of my invention may be em loyed instead v of the one explained, change eing made as regards the mechanism herein disclosed, provided the means stated by any of the following claims or the e uivalent of such stated means he employe I therefore particularly point out and distinctly claim as my invention 1. In a device of the character described, the combination of a base member stamped from sheet metal, with an integral clownwardly bent attaching portion and an upturned flange at each end, said member also having an unobstructed outwardly opening recess adapted to receive and support the end of a milk bottle or like article, and a cover member stamped from sheet metal with a front wall. two end walls disposed to lie without the flanges on said base member. and a rear wall disposed to lie between such flanges, said end walls being pivotally attached to the corresponding flanges adjacent the rear edge of said base member.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination of a base member stamped from sheet metal with an integral downwardly bent attaching portion and an upturned flange at each end, said member also having an unobstructed outwardly opening recess adapted to receive and support the end of a milk bottle or a like article, a cover member stamped from sheet metal with an overhanging front wall, two end walls disposed to lie Without the flanges on said base member and a rear wall disposed to lie between such flanges, said end Walls being pivotally attached to the corresponding flanges adjacent the rear edge of said base member, and a lock in said cover member, said lock and said overhanging wall being spaced to receive therebetween a locking tongue on the base member.
Signed by me this 10th day of July, 1924.
