BOX-FASTENER.
Tocll whom it mag concern: p i
it known that I, Ennnsr N. STAMM, a citizen! of the United States, residing at St. Louis, Missouri, have. invented a certain new and useful Improvement p in Box-Fastoners, ofwhich the following is a full, clear,
and exact description, such as will enable fothers skilled in the a-rtto which it apper tains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to box bers arranged on the inside ofthe'box and a icoveryof the box.
cheaply.
Another objectis to provide a box fas-. tenor of the character described which is so designed that the act of breaking the sealpi disengaging the movable part or element of the device, and grasping the lid orcover of l the box is effected by practically a single;
l holder 6, said pocket 6 havmgan opening cts and desirablefeatures of my 1 Aof the box. The pocket (5 provided operation 7 Other obj e [invention will be hereinafter, pointed out.

Referring to the drawings which illustrate the preferred form of my invention,
A; designates the movable lid or cover of a box or shipping case, and B designates the :nfrontwall of thebox. Cooperatlng members are arranged on the inside of the box for locking the lid A in its closed position, and
1; 5 anopening 1 is formed in said lid 80 as to the device the lid A. A seal 10, which preferably consists of a permit the cooperating parts of i piece of card-board or some other suitable materlal is arranged on the lnside of the lid, A over the opening 1 so as to prevent fasteners of 1 the type which comprise cooperating room One ob ect of invention is to provide; a box fastener of the character described that comprises only a few members of Simple construction thatcan be manufactured i under side of the lid A to receive the. seal Specification of Lettersat n I liatented 1913. the lid frombeing released. and raised without first breaking theseal.
In the embodiment of my invention herein show nthe movable element ofthe llocle ing devlceconsists of a resilient member 2 preferably formed from a stri of spring metalor material that has some resiliency.
Saidam-cmber 2 is secured to the inner face of the front wall B of the box, and itis bent inwardly or offset at 3, as shown in Figs; 1 and 2, so that theupper portion of same willbe spaced away slightlyfromthe inner sideiof the front wall B of the box. At the ripper end of themember 2is a latergages a member 5 on the under side of the lid A when the lid is closed and. thus securely locks said lid in its closed position. A pocket 6 or holder is provided on the (land hold said seal in operative position with relation to the hole. 1 in the lid it, and
in. the Jreferred form of my invention as herein s town the member 5 that. cooperates with the movable member 2 of the device is formed integral with the pocket or i seal- 6 that alines with the opening 1 in the lid i with laterally. projecting flanges 7 through which fastening: deviccstl pass, as shown in Fig? 3, so as to secure saidpoclret to the under side of the lid A, and said pocket is open in its front end, as shown in Figs. 1 andQ, so as to permit the seal 0 to be introduced into same. The side and rearwalls of the pocket 6 prevent the seal froinbeing shifted or moved out of alinenient with the opening 1 in the lid of thebox, and said pocket is arranged closeenough to the front wall B of the box to prevent the seal from being moved forwardly far enough to uncover the opening 1 in the lid or shift the seal out of alinement with said opening. It will, of course, be understood that it is immaterial so far as my broadidea is concerned whether the member 4: is formed integral with the pocket 6 or from. aseparate piece of material but I prefer the construc-.
herein shown on acconnt of its simplicity, durability and low cost ofmannfad tore. One convenient and inexpensive way to make the pocket or seal-holder 6 is to stamp it from sheet metal andthen bend or press a portion of the bottom wall of said pocket downwardly so as to form a lip or substantially U-shaped member f that is adapted to receive the hook 5 on the upper end of the movable element 2 of the locking device.
The seal C is slipped into the holder or gagement with the hook 5,"the member .2
will spring back to normal position, moving the hook 5 over the member 4 and thus se curely locking the lid of the box in its closed position, as shown in Fig. 1.
To open the box, the operator inserts his finger through the opening 1 in the lid so as to break the seal C and thus permit the finger to pass into the box far enough to engage the member 2 and move it forwardly or toward the front Wall E of the box far enough to carry the hook 5 and the upper end of same out of engagement with the member 4t on the under side of the lid. As soon as the movable member 2 of the device has been disengaged from the cooperating stationary member 4 on the under side of the lid the lid can be raised. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the rear side of the member 5 is curved at 4: so that said member will conform approximately to the shape of the operators finger and thus form a member that is easy to grasp during the operation of raising the lid.
A box fastener or lid-locking device of the construction above-described is inexpensive to manufacture and install because it comprises only three parts, namely, the resilient member 2 that is secured to the inner side of the front wall of the box and which may be conveniently formed from a strip of spring metal, the seal-holder that is secured to the under side of the lid and which is provided with an integral portion that cooperates with said resilient member, and the seal that is arranged in said holder. It would be impossible to release the device and raise the lid without first breaking the seal because the holder or pocket in which the seal is arranged is so designed that the seal cannot be shifted or moved out of alinement with the opening in the lid. And still another desirable feature of such a box fastener is that the act of breaking the seal, disengaging the movable element, and grasping the lid, is effected by a single operation, namely, inserting the, finger through the opening 1 in the lid far enough to break the seal C and push the member 2 forwardly out of engagement with the cooperating member l on the under side of the lid.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new andidesire to secure by Letters Patent is: o
A; box fastener comprising a seal-holder arranged on the under side of the lid of the box in proximity to an opening in said lid and stamped from a piece of metal that is bent so as to form a pocket, asubstantially U-shaped member at the front of said pocket, and flanges through which fastening devices pass to secure the holder to the lid, and aresilient member on the inner side of the front wall of the box provided at its upper end with a hook that projects into the U-shaped member on said holder when the lid is closed.
In testimony whereof I hereunto atiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses, t iis first day of May 1912.
