Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known-that I, GEORGE A. S'rnvnNs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Centralia, in the county of Marion and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Gun-Stocks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in gim stocks, and the object of the invention is to provide a small arm, such as a rifle or gun primarily intended for hunting purposes with a stock comprising a handle upon which is mounted a suitable blade, the rear face of the blade being curved to correspond with the formation of the shoulder of the user of the gun, and the sharpened blade being protected by a hinged shield.
With these objects in view, the invention resides in the novel construction and arrangement of gun stocks hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings there has been illustrated a simple and preferred embodiment of the improvement, and in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a gun stock constructed in accordance with my invention, and showing the same in proper position upon a gun. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the stock removed. Fig. 3 is a sectional view upon the line 33 of Fig. 1.
In the accompanying drawings the numeral 1 designates a small arm of any desired or preferred construction. The arm 1 directly to the rear of the cartridge exploding mechanism is provided with a threaded bore, and this bore is adapted for the reception of a threaded extension 2 provided upon the handle 3 of a gun stock 4- The end of the handle, opposite to that of the threaded portion 2 is provided with a blade or shoulder member 5. The member 5 is of a formation similar to that of a hunters ax and has its outer face concaved as at 6 to correspond to the contour of the shoulder of the sportsman using the gun.
It will be noted by reference to the several figures of the drawing that the sharpened portion of the blade 6 extends a suitable distance below the handle 3, while the upper portion of the said blade may be rounded or flattened as desired. In order to provide effective means for preventing the sharpened edge of the blade 5 from contacting the user, as well as to provide a means for preventing the blade being dulled by contacting bushes or the like, the said blade is provided with a shield 7. This shield 7 may be hingedly connected with the rearwardly projecting portion of the arm 1 or may be pivotally connected with the handle 3 as designated by the numeral 8 and the shield proper is formed with a pair of upstanding lip members 9 adapted to engage each of the side faces of the blade 5 and the free end of the shield is provided with a suitable clip 10 which contacts the concaved outer face or edge of the blade 5 and effectively retains the said shield in locked position upon the blade.
From the above description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it will be readily noted that-a gun stock constructed as above described is not only of an extremely simple construction but may be easily and quickly applied to any desired make of small arms and may, when desired, be readily removed from the gun or rifle.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. A stock for guns comprising a separable handle member adapted to be secured to the gun, and said handle member having its rear end provided with an arcuate shoulder abutment member having one of its edges sharpened and a shield for said sharpened edge.
2. The combination with a gun, of aremovable stock therefor, said stock comprising a member having its rear end formed in the shape of an ax blade, said blade having its outer end concaved, a shield for the blade pivotally connected with the stock, and said shield being provided with an oflset catch portion adapted to engage the outer concaved end of the abutment member.
