GUN-SlGqHT.
SPECIFIGATiON-forming part of Letters Patent No. 793,016, dated June 20, 1905.
Application vfiled August 8, 1903. Serial No. 168,822. I
To all whom it may concern:
Be it--kn0wn that I, SIDNEY M. MURRAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Marysvale, in the county of Piute and State of Utah, have invented new and useful Improvements in Gun-Sights, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has relation to improvements in gun-sights; and it consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinai'ter described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
, In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of the barrel of .a firearm, showing the improved sight applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a rear end elevation of the sight. Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section therethrough. Fig. 4 is a top plan View of the same. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the complete sight, showing the bead removed therefrom.
Similar numerals of reference are employed to indicate corresponding parts in the several views. l
The numerall designates the muzzle ex tremityofa rifle or shotgun barrel and has extending across the upper portion thereof a dovetail groove 2 to receive a correspondingly-shaped base-flange 3, depending from a base 4, from the center of which rises the sight-body 5, formed with vertical walls which serve to form a longitudinal recess 6, opening out through the front end 7 and terminating at a rear closed wall 8 of less vertical extent than the rear maximum height of the sightbody. The upper edge 9 of the sight-body inclines continuously downwardly from the rear toward the front end, and extending through one side of-the body near the top is a set-screw 10. The bead or sight-piece 11 is intended to be constructed of any suitable material adapted for the purposesuch asivory, brass, copper, tin, or other substancewhich may be colored as desired. This bead is of approximately the same contour as the body within the confines of the recess, but is of greater said upper edge 9, will project above the lat-' ter edge. After the beadis inserted in the recess 6 it contacts with the bottom and rear wall thereof. A set-screw 10 is tightened and impinges against one side of the bead to hold the latter firmly in applied position. At any time that it may be desired to substitute one beadfor another the screw 10 is loosened,
when the bead may be readily forced out of the sight-body by the use of a penknife blade or other small implement, and the substitute bead is then inserted and secured by the setscrew.
It is proposed to equip the sight with a number of beads of diiferent-colors and materials, so that the user of a firearm having the improved sight thereon may readily change the V bead. Itwill also be understood that changes in the proportions, dimensions, and minor details may be resorted to without in the least departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus fully described the invention, What is claimed as new is A gun-sight comprising the muzzle extremity having a dovetail groove extending transversely across its upper surface, a base-flange having'another base-flange depending therefrom having opposite sideedges which correspond to the shape of the dovetail groove, a central sight-body mounted on the firstmentioned base-flange having vertical walls extending upwardly therefrom, said walls being spaced apart to form a recess between them, the Walls being further provided with open front ends and also having a wall for closing the rear ends, said rear wall being of v a less vertical extent than the height of the side Walls, one of the side walls being provided with a side opening, the upper edges of the walls being continuously inclined downwardly to their outer ends, a bead or sightpiece constructed to conform tothe configuration of the shape of the side walls, said one side ofthe head or sight-piece, suhstmr sight serving to be mounted in the recess so i tially as specified. and against the rear Wall, the sight-piece be- SIDNEY M. MURRAY.
