' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PAUL BRION, OF PARIS, FRANUE.
SKINNIN G-KNIFE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 268,997, dated December 12, 1882.
Application filed February 15, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, PAUL BRION, of Paris, in the Republic of France, have invented a certain new'and useful Improvement in Skinning-Knives, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to knives for skinning provided with guards for limiting the projection of their edges and lifting up the skin as the knife advances.
The invention consists in a novel combination of parts hereinafter described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a side view of a knife provided with my improved guard, the guard being shown as swung away from the blade. Fig. 2 represents the opposite side of the knife, and Fig. 3 represents an edge view thereof.
Similar letters of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures.
A designates the blade of the knife, which is provided with a handle-extension, A; and B designates the guard, which is likewise provided with a handle-extension, B. To the handle extensions A B ofthe blade and guard are secured the two cheek-pieces G G, which together form the handle. The blade and guard handle-extensions A B are pivoted together by a screw or rivet, a, which is located at the outer extremity or butt of thehandle, and which likewise passes through the cheekpieces 0. The blade and guard extensions A the other with a clamping-screw, c, which fits .sion B.
in ascrew-threaded hole therein, and is adapted to fit loosely in the slot 1). In this example of my invention the slot 1) is in the blade-extension A and the screw 0 is in the guard-exten- When the guard 13 is adjusted into position for use, as shown in Fig.2, the screw 0 may be tightened up, and by clamping the guard and guard-extension B on the blade and bladeextension A securely holds the guard in proper position relatively to the blade. By loosening the clampingscrew c provision is afiorded for adjusting the guard so that its edge is in the desired position relatively to the edge of the blade'or for swinging the guard entirely away from the blade, as shown in Fig. 1. This provides for grinding the blade without entirely detaching the guard, it having only to be swung aside.
I do not claim broadly an adjustable guard applied to the blade of a knife for skinning or removing skins, as this, broadly considered, is
