Description

GEORGE T. COLLINS.
irmlrove'menfv in. Curriers Siickers N0, 115,709, PatentedJune6,'1871.
- Pag EMPROVEMVENT NCURREERS SLlCKERS.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 115,709, dated June 6, 1871.
enable others skilled in the art to make andV use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specilication.
This invention relates to improvements in curriers sliekers; and it consists in an arrangement of the blade and handle and adjusting apparatus for moving the blade, as it wears away, to have it project from the handle the same distance at all times. It also consists in the application to the handle of a strengthening-band of iron to prevent it from working.
Figure l is a side elevation of my improved slicker with a part broken ont. Fig. 2 is a section on the line x .e of Fig. l; and Fig. 3 is a l section on the line y y of Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. j
A is a broad Wood handle, with projections B at each end, and a deep slot, G, extending from the edge opposite the projection'to one edge of the latter, or thereabout, as clearly shown. D is a strengthening-band, tted on the side, which is slotted to hold the two parts divided by the slot against Working and splitting. It has a hole through each end, which is enlarged for the purpose, to receive the adjustin g-screws E through them, and the projections B along the edge of the handle, and through the blade G out of the slot at the edge of the handle. These screws are made smooth in the part passing through the projection B, but screw in the ears F; and they are prevented from end movement by a head on each end, as E I, one of which may have a thumb-bit, if preferred, for turning the screws; or they may be turned by a screw driver. K represents binding-screws, screwing in the handleagainst the screws E to prevent them from turning after the blade has been adjusted. L represents metal bushing, inserted in the'handle to support the binding-screws; and M represents, in dotted lilies, metal bushing for the screws E. By this arrangement the blade may be moved forward as fast as it wears, and held firmly in position; also, the warping of the slotted part oi' the handle, by which the blade is oiten loosened in "the common slickers, is avoided. Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The arrangement of the blade and handle, substantially as shown, for adjusting the former, and the combination therewith of thek adjusting-screws, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with the blade and handle, of the metallic band D, substantiallyr as specified.
