Description
5 te a dmml DPW. PERRY, OF VVILKESBARRE, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR'TO HIMSELF AND O. K. MOORE, OF THE SAME PLACE.
Letters Patent No. 84,964, dated .December 15, 1868.
INIPROVEMIENT IN TOOL FOR CUTTING- MOLDINGS.
The Schedule referred in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
. which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to planing-machines for cutting mouldngs; and g It consists in the manner in which the bit or cutter is formed, and in the manner of its attachment to the head, whereby many .objections to the common method are obviated, and many advantages are secured, as I will proceed to describe.
Figure 1 represents a section of g. 2, through the line xi, showing crosssections of the bit, and the manner in which it is held in the head.
Figure 2 is an outside view, showing the head and a v,side View of the bit.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A represents the head.
B represents the bit. i
C represents the cap by which the bit is secured to the head. v i l The head A issecured to the shaft, and the bit or cutter is secured to the head by the cap C, by four Screws, as seen at d.
When a broad cutter or bit is used, a central screw, e, is employed.
As these bits have been made heretofore, they have beenslotted for screws, and thereby greatly weakcned.
By my method of forming and fastening the bit, all the obj ections to the ordinary method are ob\iiated ;th bit is made entirely without holes 0r slots.
Its side edges are bevelled, and the recess f in theblock in which the bit rests is bevelled also, so that a dovetail is formed, asseen in the drawing at g.
The pattern of the moulding to be cutis formed on the end of the bit, as seen in iig. 2. y
Bythis method of forming and securing the bit, the
moulding may be as broad or as narrow as may be desired, an(` made of a single piece of metal.
By this method, two dilereut patterns or styles of moulding may be formed on the same bit, (one at each end,) as seen inthe drawing, thereby making the bit reversible.
his a setscrew, which passes through projecting lugs i, on the head, which serves to hold the bit steady.
By fastening the bit to the head with the screws d, all vibration is preventedand consequently a smoother and better moulding is made. y
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The bevelled moulding-cutter B, adjustably attached to the head A, by means of the recess g, cap C, screws d, set-screws e in the cap C, and the set-screw h in the side of the head, all arranged to operate in the manner herein shown and described.
