Laim Patent No. 96,080, dated october 26, 1869.

IMPROVEMENT IN SAMPLES FOR SHOE-DEALERS.

The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ABRAHAM N. BRENEMAN, of the city of Lancaster', in the county of Lancaster, and State ot- Pennylvania, have invented a new device or' sample, to represent a fac-simile of any kind or style of .Shoe or Bootee on a ilat surface, made out of the material to be employed; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the inode adopted for making `the same, reference being had Yto the accompanying drawings, vmaking a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents one style on vthe outer surface.

The nature of my invention consists in the manner of representing theform, material, and ornamentation of mens, ladies, and childrens shoes, bootees, 85o., on a. flat surface, made of scraps, or of the materials de-VA signed to be used for the purpose of exhibition in showxvindows, or for samples of the style and make to be presented to the trade, occupying much less room, and at a saving of material, as well as weight; easy of being packed and conveyed from place to place.

lo enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, it is only necessary to imitate the sainple presented so them, or to cut and fashion the different parts, and combine them in the manner shown, by pasting or sewing the fiat surfaces together, when cut to shape, scolloped, notched, 85e., as designed, with the buttons and ornamental stitching, so as to represent the shape and style, and present a fac-simile of a finished article of one side only. The reverse side may show any peculiar mode of lining, or mode of fastening the buttons, as shown iu the drawings.

Fig. 2 is the reverse side offg. 1, showing simplya waxend drawn through the eyes of the buttons.

Thus any number of samples can be gotten up, and placed upon cards, or otherwise exhibited, representing every -variety of style, material, and make, with prices annexed, as samples to purchase by or inanufacture from. l

This mode of making samples is believed to be new, and one highly desirable and useful to the trade'.

It is not the shape of the pattern that I claim, it is a sample or fac-simile of the finished article, represent ing it in its form, shape, ornaments, and trimmings, on a flat surface, as aforesaid, or one finished side of all its parts shown,n sole, heel, toe-pieces, Sto., complete. y

What I claim as my invention, and desire t0 secure by Letters Patent, is

The exact similitude or sample of the out, trimmings, and ornamentation of .shoes,`gaiters,` bootees, 85o., on a flat surface, made in the manner and for the purpose specified.
