c. MILLER DMONSTRATING SHOE SAMPLE Filed DBC. 2, 1926 Patented June 24, 1930 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFlCEA DEMONSTRATING SHOE SAMPLE Application ledDecember 2, 1926. Serial No. 152,233.
My invention has for its object primarily to provide a demonstrating device or sample designed to be employed for selling slippers,l
Y it is actually fashioned and made. By the use of the demonstrating sample a number of lines of different footwear, each including a large assortment of styles, may be readily transported and displayed in a comparatively limited space, since it would require if desired only the showing of a single completed shoe or slipper of each line of the styles, in order to permit the customer to examine the quality as a whole of the foot-` wear and then select the wanted styles from the demonstrating samples. n p
The invention consists broadly of a backing sheet which may be of material of a color and shape similar to the material, color and kcontour of a shoe of a given style. Fixed on the backing sheet is a plate which may include a number of sections or portions each of the same material, color and shape as the material', color and contour of the corresponding .35 parts of the depicted` shoe, and the portions of the plate are placed on the backing sheet in the identical positions of the parts of the shoes which said portions of the plate represent. A large variety of styles of shoes, slippers, boots and other footwear may each be correctly represented in fiat form for demonstrating each style of the footwear as it appears when manufactured. Vith these and other objects in view, the invention will be hereinafter more vfully eX- plained with reference-to thefaccompanying drawing forming a part of this specification in which similar characters of referencelindicate corresponding parts all'the views,
and willthen be pointed out in the claims at the end of the description. i
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a side elevation of one form of demonstrating shoe sample embodying my invention. v
Fig. 2 is a sectional view, partly in eleva-- tion, taken on the lineV 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of another style of the demonstrating shoe sample, and
Fig. 4 is a sectional view, partly in elevation, taken on the line 4 4 of Fig. 8.
As an illustrative form of carrying the invention into practice I show in Fig. 1 of the drawing a demonstrating sample of a womens low shoe or slipper 10 of a stylel having the sole 11, heel 12, upper 13, foot opening 14 and instep strapl.
The device has a backing sheet 16 .which is preferably of a shape corresponding to the contour of the slipper, and by using the term contour it will` be understood that I mean theshape in outline of the shoe asfit `appears Vin elevation or other suitable positions capable of being depicted or duplicated in flat form according to the principles ofthe invention. The backing sheet 16 may be made of leather or other material similar to the material of a portion or the lwholeof the shoe represented, and the color lof the backing sheet may also be of a color corresponding to the color of at least a portion of the shoe'such as black at 17 kof the sole 11 of the slipper 10. Y
On one face of the backing sheetv 16 `is a sheet or plate 18 composed of a'section or portion 19 representing the body of the heel 12, a section yor portion 2O representing the foot part of the upper 13, a section or portion 21 representing the heel part `ofthe upper, strips or portions 22, 22a, 22", 22'rep're'senting the border ofthe foot opening 14, and the Strips or portions 23, y24 which form the vinstep strap 15 of the slipper. The foot portion 20 and the heel portion 21 of the upper 13 of the slipper are of various lsizes and shapes and these portions are positioned in spaced relation to part of the lower edge of the backing sheet 16 so that the marginal portion of the backing sheet below the foot portion of theupper depicts the black sole 17 of the slipper. The heel portion 19 of the plate 18 may be of a blue color, and this portion is of such a size that its lower end is spaced above the lower edge of the heel portion of the backing sheet to provide a representation of the top lift, as 25, of the heel of the slipper. .The foot portion k2O and the heel portion 21 of the upper 13 are white the same as the material of like parts of the slipper, and the opposing edges of the foot portion 20 and heel portion 21 are stitched together, as at 26. The edge of the slipper of which this device is a representation is of a fanciful shape, and this fancy shape is-rcpresented in the device by the border strips or portions 22, 22a, 22, 22c of the plate 18. T he border strips 22, 22h, 22c are of a blue color,v
and the border strip 22"L is black as indicated. The edges of all of these border strips are stitched, as at 27, 28, to the sheet or plate 18, and the stitching 26, 27 28 may also connect the portions of the upper 13 of the sample to the backing sheet 16. Gn the border strips of the upper 13 are two spaced buttons 29, 20. The strip member or portion 23 of the instep strap 15 has in one of its ends a buttonhole 31 throughV which the button 29 is disposed. The strap member 23 is black like the border strip 22a of the upper 13, and the edges of this strap member is stitched, as at 32, 33, to the backing sheet. The strap member 24 has also in one of its ends a buttonhole 34 through which the button 3() is disposed. The strap member 24 is blue like the borderstrips 22, 22D, 22C, and the edges of this strapmember 24'islstitched at 35, 3G to the backing sheet. All of the sections and portions of the heel 12, upper 13 and instep strap 13 are made of leather or other material in colors similar to the material and colors of the corresponding parts of the slipper depicted, and the portions of the plate 18 are located on the backing sheet 1G in the identical positions of the parts of the slipper which the plate 18 represents. The parts of the plate 18 not stitched to the backing sheet may be adhesively fixed on the backing sheet.
The form of the demonstrating sample, shown in Fig. 3, has the backing sheet 37 of a shape conforming to the contour of the shoe represented. This backing sheet may be black, as 38, or of any other color as well as being of the same material as a portion or all of the shoe depicted. On one face of the backing sheet37 is a sheet or'plate 39 representing the upper 40 and heel covering 4()a of the shoe or slipper depicted. These parts are of shapes corresponding to the general shape of the backing sheet 37, the upper having the foot or toe portion 41, the heel portion 42, the heel covering 43 andthe foot opening 44. These parts of the upper 40 of the plate 39 may be made of brocaded satin, cloth, fancy leather or other material of designs similar to the corresponding parts of the shoe represented, and these parts of this upper are of sizes and are arranged on the backing sheet 37 with the lower edge of the upper being spaced slightly above the lower edge of the backing sheet so that the extending portions of the lower edge of the backing sheet represents the sole 45 and the top lift 46 of the heel of the shoe. 'Ihe plate 39 may be adhesively secured or stitched or otherwise fastened to the backing sheet 37. Un the upper 40 of the plate 39 at the edge of the foot opening 44 is glued or otherwise secured a plate or flap, as 47, which may be of a triangular shape of black or other color contrasting with the colors of other parts of the sample, and this plate 47 may be of a size extending lengthwise from the rear part to the forward part of the edge of the foot opening as well as extending downwardly of the upper toward the shank of the sole 45.`
Also on the upper 40 under the forward part of the lower edge of the triangular plate or flap 47 may be glued or otherwise attached a plate or flap 48 of a fancy shape, as illustrated, and this plate may be of a yellow, gold or other color inv contrast to the colors or patterns of the other parts of the sample. The plates 39, 47, 48 are similar in materials, shapes and colors to the corresponding parts of the shoe depicted, and the plates are located on the backing sheet 37 in the identical positions of the parts of the shoe which the plates represent. The demonstrating sample as thusV devised is an accurate representation in style and materials of a particular shoe or slipper, and enables the shoe as it appears when made complete to be clearly visualized by a prospective purchaser. Moreover, such samples enable a large variety of styles of shoes, slippers, boots and other footwear to be each correctly depicted in Hat form for being transported and displayed'in av limited space and avoid the expense of making samples of each shoe complete as is incident to the present methods of displaying and selling footwear.
In the foregoing description, I have embodied the preferred form of my invention, but I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself thereto, as I am aware that modifications may be made therein-without departing from the principle or .sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention, therefore, I reserve to myself the right to make such changes as fairly fall within the scope thereof. v
Having thus described my invention,I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent y 1. A demonstrating shoe sample in flat form, comprising a backing sheet of material of a color and shape similar to thematerial, color and contour of a shoe of a given style, a plate fixed on the backing sheet,
los
said plate being of a shape similar to the contour of a shoe of a given style and the plate including portions each of the saine material, color and shape as the material, color and contour of the corresponding parts of the depicted shoe and the portions of the plate being placed on the bacln'ng sheet in the identical positions of the parts of the shoe Which said portions of the plate represent, and means connecting the portions of the plate together, said means being similar to the connections of the corresponding parts of the shoe represented.
2. A demonstrating shoe sample in flat form, comprising a backing sheet of material of a color and shape similar to the 1naterial, color and contour of a shoe of a given style, a plate fixed on the backing sheet, said plate including portions each of the same material, color and shape as the material, color and contour of the corresponding parts of the depicted shoe and the portions of the plate being placed on the backing sheet in the identical positions of the parts Y of the shoe which said portions of the plate represent, and stitching connecting a number of the portions of the plate together, said stitching being similar to the stitching of the corresponding parts of the shoe represented.
