To all whom 'it may concern.'

Be it known that I, WHLIAM PADERNAGHT, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Maternity-Skirts, of which the following is a specication, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing. j

This invention relates to maternity skirts, and has for its primary object the improvement of that particular style or skirt illustrated in my former Patent No. 853,993, granted May 21, 1907.

As distinguished from skirts which are devoid of back pieces underlying the usual placket opening disclosed for example in my Patent No. 929,163, dated July 27, 1909, and wherein the opposite portions of the skirt are brought together and buttcned or otherwise fastened along the line of the placket opening, the skirt of my present invention, like that of my said first mentioned patent, employs a back piece over which adjustable opposite portions of the skirt are folded and secured thereto along the line of the waist band.

The use of a back piece, as above suggested, enables the provision of a skirt which, although capable of a wide range of adjustment, to accommodate different sized waist measurements, always present a neat,

finished appearance, a nice fit of the garment to the wearer, and obviates the necessity of employing fastenings along the placket opening.

In the construction illustrated in my earlier patent above referred to, the adjustment of the skirt to obtain the desired waist measurement and t, can be obtained only after the garment has been placed upon the user, and inasmuch as the securing devices are at the back, much inconvenience and annoyance is necessarily encountered in the operation.

As above suggested, the skirt of my later patent, to wit No. 929,163 uses no backpiece, thus requiring the opposite or separate portions of the skirt to be buttoned or otherwise fastened to close the placket opening, and while in this particular skirt an arrangement and devices are afforded enabling a preliminary adjustment of the waist measurements, there is the disadvantage pre- Specication of Letters Patent.

sented incident to the bulky or enlarged formation o-f the body required to enable the body portions to be twice folded to secure the waist measurement. In other words, throughout the range of the adjustment of the skirt in question there must be the double folding of the fabric.

The spirit of the invention herein contemplates the provisions of means to overcome the objections noted, by enabling the adjustment of the garment to the size desired with a single fold prior to putting the same on the wearer, and subsequently simply fastening said previously adjusted portions upon the back pieces. Thus, Ihave perfected the style of skirt mentioned, and aiforded a garment possessing all of the desirable characteristics of my previous invention with the added feature of the preliminary adjustment referred to.

A convenient embodiment of the present invention comprises a skirt provided with a back piece, fastening means on the back piece, and means enabling the adjustment of the opposite portions of the skirt which are laid upon the back piece, including free extensions of the waist band carried by said portions, and means on the waist band cooperating with the said extensions to fasten said folded portions as desired, preliminary to the use of the skirt, said folded portions being adapted to coperate with the fastenings on the back piece to secure the placket in closed condition, when the skirt is applied to the wearer.

The novel characteristics of the invention hereinbefore brought out, and other novel details will be apparent upon the detailed description hereinafter contained, when read in connection with the accompanying drawing forming a part hereof and wherein one embodiment of the invention is illustrated.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a back view of a skirt made in accordance with the present invention, the lower portions of the skirt being broken away, and the parts being shown as they appear prior to adjustment, Fig. 2 is a similar enlarged view showing the opposite portions of the skirt folded and secured to the back piece, Fig. 3 is a top view showing the manner of securing the preliminary adjustment of the opposite folded portions and the manner of securing the same to the back piece, and Fig. 4L is a fragmentary inside view of one of the foldable portions of the skirt.

Referring more specifically to the drawings, wherein like reference characters designate the same parts in the different views, A represents the body of the skirt, I3 the back piece and C the waist band.

D and E represent the opposite foldable portions of the skirt adapted to be adjusted, laid upon and secured to the back piece B. The waist band is free at its ends to extend beyond the portions D and E to a substantial extent as indicated at C2, and these extensions, as also those portions of the waist band immediately adjoining the same and on the foldable portions D and E, are provided with series of eyelets F. The back piece in turn is provided at its uppei end with two )air of hooks G and H, each having pivote spring held tongues disclosed in my former patent and not necessary to be herein specifically shown. The tongues of each pair project at right angles to each other to better prevent accidental unfastening. At the end of each series of eyelets F and on the inside of the waist band is a hook I, the tongue of which projects inwardly away from the placket opening, and also on the inside of the waist band, including the extensions thereof, are similar series of numbers or other indicators K.

The free strap extensions are elongated to a sufficient extent to coperate with the permanently fixed securing devices (hooks I) to preliminar-ily fasten the opposite portions of the skirt in any position throughout the range of adjustment thereof, while necessitating but a single folding of the fabric of the body of the skirt and without requiring said body to be of such an enlarged or bulky formation as to enable the fabric of the body itself to be at all times folded inwardly to said hooks, for itwill be appreciated that if the strap extensions were not provided the body would have to be of such an enlarged formation as would permit the same to be folded back to the hooks I at all times, whereas by the use of the extensions, when there is but a slight fold of the opposite portions of the skirt, the strap extensions alone run over to the securing hooks and coperate therewith for the preliminary fastening desired.

To adjust the skirt the size is determined by the characters K and each foldable portion D and E is turned inwardly upon itself, and those eyelets upon the waist band which register with the hooks I are engaged with said hooks to secure the folded portions in position prior to placing the skirt upon the user, the extensions C2 enabling this preliminary fastening even when the waist measurement is increased to its largest extent. After the preliminary adjustment aforesaid, the skirt is placed upon the user and the registering eyelets in the opposite folded portions engage with the hooks Gr and I-I on the back piece to secure the placket opening in closed condition and the skirt upon the wearer. The hooks H of course, engage the folded portions E while the hooks G engage the folded portion D, the hooks being closely arranged so that when the skirt is in use the folded portions abut on a line at the center of the back of the skirt and give the desired neat, finished appearance.

IVhile I have herein disclosed a preferred embodiment of the invention, it is to be understood that the invention is capable of being embodied in other construct-ions differing somewhat in matters of detail from that illustrated, as will appear to those skilled in the art.

I claim l. A skirt of the character described, having a back piece and foldable portions adapted to be laid upon and secured to said back piece, in combination with means for independently securing the folded portions in position and other means for securing the folded portions to the back piece, said first mentioned means including free strap extensions on the foldable portions and devices for engaging and fastening said strap extensions in place.

2. A skirt of the character described, having a back piece and separate adjustable portions adapted to be laid upon said back piece and to be secured in position thereover, in combination with means independent-ly of the back piece for preliminarily adjusting said portions.

3. A skirt of the character described, having a back piece and separate adjustable portions adapted to be laid upon said back piece and to be secured in position thereover, in combination with means for preliminarily adjusting said portions, and other means for subsequently securing the adjusted portions to the back piece.

l. A skirt of the character described, having oppositely disposed foldable portions, a strap extension carried by each of said portions, and means on each of said portions to operate with its strap extension to secure said portions in folded position.

5. A skirt of the character described, having oppositely disposed foldable portions, a strap extension carried by each of said portions, and means on each of said portions to operate with its strap extension to secure said portions in folded position, in combination with similar indicators associated with each portion showing the extent to which the parts should be folded to get the desired waist measurement.

6. A skirt of the character described, provided with oppositely disposed adjustable portions having free strap extensions, eyes carried by the Waist band and said eXtensions, and hooks adapted to coperate with said eyes for independently securing the portions in adjusted position.

7. A skirt of the character described, provided with oppositely disposed adjustable portions having free strap extensions, eyes carried by the Waist band and said eXtensions, and hooks on the Waist band adapted to coperate with said eyes for securing the portions in adjusted position, said skirt also having a back piece and hooks on said back piece also adapted to cooperate With said eyes to secure the adjusted portions to the back piece.

8. A skirt of the character described provided with oppositely disposed separated adjustable portions, a free strap extension carried by each of said portions, and coperating means on each of said portions and on each strap extension to independently secure each portion in adjusted position.

9. A skirt of the character described provided With oppositely disposed separated adjustable portions, a free strap extension carried by each of said portions, and coperatingl means on each of said portions and on its strap extension to independently secure each portion in adjusted position, in combination With means for securing the adjusted portions in place on the body of the wearer.
