JOHN EARLY, OF TEKONSI-IA, MICHIGAN.
DOOR-FASTENER.
Application filed September 5, 1907, Serial No. 391,435.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN EARLY, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Tekonsha, in the county of Calhoun and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof,
to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to door fasteners and more particularly relates to a device of the class which is readily portable and capable of being applied to a door at any time without tools for the purpose.
The object of the device is to afford to transients and others a simple and eflicient fastener which may be applied to any room door to give additional protection to the regular lock, and whereby the same cannot be removed or unlocked by key or other means outside the room.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective View of my improved door fastener as applied to a closed door. Fig. 2 is a perspective reverse side of the fastener removed from a door. Fig. 3 is a perspective view with the fastener unclosed. Fig. & is a modified form of my fastener.
In the drawings, A, represents a door; B, a door jamb; and G, the door fastener. The fastener, in the main, comprises the parts 1, 2, 3 and 4. The parts 1 and 2, at their outer ends form a hinge secured together by a pintle, 3. The part 1, at its inner end is provided with teeth, 7, which are bent at right angles to the body portion and extend outwardly from the hinged sections. The part 2, is somewhat shorter than the part 1, and at its inner end is bent outwardly from the part 1, and forms a foot, 5. Secured by a pivot, 6, near the hinged portion of the part 1, a double hooked hasp, i, is secured. This hasp, at its free extremity, is provided with the oppositely and inwardly turned hooks, 8, which are adapted to engage the parts 1 and 2, when the latter are swung together, and hold the same in such position until released. The object in providing a hasp with Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June *7, 1910.
Renewed November 17, 1909.
double hooks as set forth, is to permit the use of the fastener by its being applied to either the right or left of a door jamb, which will necessitate the same being reversed and inverted, as will be more fully comprehended in Figs. 1 and 2.
As is evident, all doors are not hinged to swing in the same direction, and as the fastener is applied to the door jamb opposite the hinges, it is found necessary to provide means for holding the parts 1 and 2 together when closed, and this is accomplished by providing the hasp, 7, with oppositely-disposed, inwardly-bent hooks, 8. The space between the hooks is such as will permit the parts 1 and 2 to pass between their points and at the same time afford room for unlatching one of the hooks to swing the part 2, whether applied either to the right or to the left door jamb.
In operation the part 1, having the teeth 7, is placed against a door jamb opposite the door hinges and to the opening side of the door, and the teeth thereof forced within the door jamb or casing; the door is thence swung shut, which prevents the removal of the teeth from the amb, the hinged portion is closed against the part 1, in such manner that the foot, 5, will snugly fit against the door, and the hasp, 4, is then depressed so that a hook, 8, will engage the parts 1 and 2, and hold the same together.
In the modified form, the part 1, difiers only in that the hinge, 9, permits the parts 1 and 10, to swing in a vertical instead of a lateral plane, the part 10, answering the purpose of the part 2, in Figs. 1, 2 and 3. The inner extremity of the part 10, has a laterally-extending curved head, 11, which is adapted to engage the door when the parts are closed together, and to prevent the parts from disengaging when closed, a double pointed catch, 12, is hinged at 13 to the part 1, and adapted to swing laterally and to inclose the parts 1 and 10, aforesaid, between the points thereof.
Having, therefore, set forth my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a door fastener, the combination of two hinged sections, one section of which is pro- Serial No. 528,480%.
